St. A Drops Contest, Dieterich, SEB, Neoga, S. Central, WSS, Newton Win In Boys Basketball

Olney took a first half lead then held off Effingham St. Anthony for a 39-35 non-conference boys high school basketball victory Tuesday evening.

St. Anthony edged out to a 9-8 opening quarter lead but Olney came back with a 14-5 second period as Chase Travis and Alec Kocher scored five points each and Drew Blank added four.

The Bulldogs had only two baskets in the period as Colton Fearday knocked in a three-pointer and Eli Levitt scored a bucket.

St. Anthony came back with a slight 6-5 third quarter to pull within 27-20 and then outscored the Tigers 15-12 in the final period but couldn't get over that second quarter run by Olney.

Griffin Sehy and Max Koenig scored nine points each for St. Anthony while C. Fearday had eight.

St. Anthony easily won the junior varsity contest, 57-35. The Bulldogs were led by Ryan Schmidt with 17 points on six field goals that included five three-pointers and Brock Fearday with 10.

At Lawrenceville

Dieterich had a big scoring second quarter and picked up a 64-46 non-conference win over Lawrenceville Tuesday evening.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 13-12 opening quarter lead then had a 26-12 second period to lead 39-24 at halftime. Andrew Lidy scored 10 of the 26 points in the quarter while Pete Britton added six and Lidy four.

Dieterich finished with a 25-22 second half. Three players hit double figures for the Maroons. Britton led the way with 20 points on six field goals that included three trifectas and five of six at the line. Lidy scored 14 points on seven field goals and Bryce Budde tallied 11 on four field goals, three of those trifectas.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown handed Moweaqua Central A&M a 52-43 loss in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

SEB held a 27-20 halftime lead. Central A&M came back with a 9-8 edge in the third period but SEB had a 17-14 final period.

SEB hit 40 percent from the field and 56 percent from the free throw line with 13 of 23. Central A&M hit only 29 percent from the field.

Caleb Campbell scored 21 points for the winners on nine of 13 from the field that included three of five from three point range. Also in double figures was Adam Atwood with 13. Campbell pulled down eight rebounds while Brady Maxey had seven. Maxey led in assists with four and had two steals. Jarrett Pasley had three steals and a blocked shot.

At Neoga

Neoga whipped through a 21-2 second period and never looked back in a 51-28 non-conference win over Shelbyville Tuesday evening.

Paci McClure led the way for the Indians in the opening quarter with nine of the 16 points as they took a 16-11 lead. Then came the second quarter and McClure continued his hot streak connecting on four three-pointers and two of two at the line for 14 points. Kaden Young added five.

Shelbyville had an 11-7 third period but Neoga finished out with a 7-4 final quarter.

McClure tallied 30 points on 10 field goals, six of those from three-point range, and four of four at the line. Young finished with eight.

At Farina

South Central put three players in double figures in a 68-58 non-conference victory over Sandoval Tuesday.

The Cougars swept out to a 22-14 opening quarter lead but Sandoval pulled back within three at halftime, 38-35. South  Central then had a 30-23 second half.

Keenin Willshire tallied 24 points to lead the Cougars. He connected on eight field goals, with three trifectas, and was five of six at the line. Aidan Dodson scored 14 and Ethan Watwood 11.

There was a storm of three-pointers raining down as Sandoval finished with 10 and South Central nine.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg  held a 27-19 opening half lead on Okaw Valley then had a 23-17 second half for a 50-36 non-conference win Tuesday evening.

Austin Wittenberg led the way for the Hatchets. He connected on 10 field goals that included four three-pointers and was two of two at the line for 18 points. Also in double figures was Samuel Vonderheide with 14 on five field goals and four of four at the line.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg now stands at 10-2 on the season. Okaw Valley dropped to 6-2.

The Hatchets also claimed the junior varsity contest, 55-44.

Newton edged out to a 19-10 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 34-13 at halftime and ended up with a 56-40 victory Tuesday evening.

Newton had three players hit double figures led by Evan Schafer with 15 followed by Parker Wolf 12 and Ben Meinhart 11. E. Schafer had two three-pointers.

The Eagles are now 9-2 on the season.

At Altamont

Casey-Westfield's Jackson Parcel proved to be the thorn in Altamont's side Tuesday evening.

With Altamont leading 48-46 in the final seconds of the contest, Parcel grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw, went downcourt and heaved up a three-pointer that won the game for the Warriors, 49-48.

Altamont trailed Casey-Westfield 7-6 after the opening quarter and 18-17 at halftime. Both teams seemed sluggish scoring but things heated up in the second half.

The Indians still trailed by a 34-28 count going into the final quarter. Mason Robinson's five points kept the Indians close in the third period and Noah Klimpel, who didn't score in the first half, came to life with a three-pointer in the third period and another one with two regular baskets in the final quarter.  Avery Jahraus tallied two trifectas and a free throw in the final quarter 20-15 run.

The Warriors connected on one three-pointer in the first half and hit six in the second half. Parcel finished with 24 points.

Three players scored in double figures for the Indians. Jahraus led the way with 12 while Robinson had 11 and Klimpel 10.

Altamont won the junior varsity contest, 71-62. Avery Jahraus had 20 while Wyatt Phillips added 13 for the winners.

At Cisne

North Clay (Louisville) held a two-point lead going into the final quarter, but Cisne came back with a 15-11 run to claim a 57-55 non-conference victory.

The two teams were tied at 16-16 after the opening quarter. Alex Boose kept the Cardinals in the contest with nine of the 16 points. Cisne then had a 14-10 second period run to lead 30-26 at half.

The Cardinals had an 18-12 third period to move ahead 44-42 going into the final quarter. Boose nailed two three-pointers and Dakota Weidner hit two baskets and two free throws for six points.

But Cisne came back with the 15-11 run and pull out the two-point victory.

North Clay had three players in double figures. Weidner and Boose led the way with 15 points each while Levi Smith added 12.
