WSS Captures St. Elmo Holiday Tourney Title

ST. ELMO -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School claimed the championship of the 61st Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday evening.

The Hatchets handed host St. Elmo/Brownstown a 39-25 loss. SEB took the early lead with an 8-6 opening quarter. But WSS came back to tie the score at halftime 12-12.

Windsor/Stew-Stras then had a 16-7 third quarter as Landon Miller knocked in a three-pointer and was two of two at the line.

In the final quarter, the Hatchets connected on their free throws for an 11-6 run.

Two players scored in double figures for the winners. Samuel Vonderheide and Talon Bridges scored 10 each while Austin Wittenberg added nine.

SEB was led by Brady Maxey and Caleb Campbell with eight each.

In the third place contest, South Central was a 50-30 winner over Cumberland.

The Cougars edged out to a 9-6 opening quarter lead behind Aidan Dodson's seven points on two field goals and three of four free throws.

South Central then had a 16-8 second period run to lead 25-14 at halftime. Dodson continued his hot scoring, knocking in two three-pointers.

The Cougars had a 12-11 third period and finished strong with a 13-5 final quarter.

Dodson finished with 20 to lead the winners while Spencer Johannes added 10.

Cumberland was led by Gavin Hendrix with eight.

The consolation championship went to Patoka/Odin over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 58-46.

Patoka/Odin held a 29-20 halftime lead and led 49-35 going into the final period. CHBC made a comeback bid but fell short.

Landreth led the winners with 24 points while Belcher added 14.

CHBC was led by Waylon Robertson and Jadon Robertson with 15 points each and Wesley Radloff with 13.

In Friday action, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City won over Ramsey, 69-58 in overtime. CHBC held a 29-16 halftime lead and led 47-31 going into the final period. Ramsey came back with a 15-8 fourth quarter run to tie the score and send the contest into overtime. In the overtime period, CHBC got the hot hand with a 14-3 run to pull out the victory.

CHBC had four players in double digits. J. Robertson led with 18 while Silas Buzzard added 17, W. Robertson 14 and Kade Persinger 10.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg reached the championship game with a 46-32 victory over Cumberland.

The Hatchets held a 21-14 halftime lead and led 33-19 going into the final period. Vonderheide led the way with 14 points while A. Wittenberg added 12.

Cumbeland was led by Jaxon Boldt with 14.

Named to the First All-Tournament Team were Most Valuable Player Samuel Vonderheide (Windsor/Stew-Stras), Adam Atwood (SEB), Waylon Robertson (CHBC), Austin Wittenberg (WSS) and Drew Belcher (Patoka/Odin). Named to the Second All-Tournament Team were Hunter Williams (Ramsey), Keenin Willshire (South Central), Brandon Hamburg (Patoka/Odin), Jaxon Boldt (Cumberland) and Aidan Dodson (South Central).

Cheerleading awards went to, first place St. Elmo/Brownstown and second place South Central.
