St. Michael, Teutopolis Capture State Eighth-Grade Girls Titles

CISSNA PARK -- Sigel St. Michael picked up its second State Tournament championship with a 40-33 win over Cissna Park in the Class 8-1A Girls State Basketball Tournament Thursday.

The Sharpshooters edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead and moved that to 18-14 at halftime. St. Michael had a 22-19 second half run.

Nancy Ruholl tallied 24 for the winners on eight field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of 10 at the line. Brooklyn Will added seven.

St. Michael finished the season with a 25-1 record.

The third place contest went to Danville Schlarman over LaSalle Trinity Catholic, 40-23.

Class 8-2A State Tournament

Teutopolis tallied a 34-24 win over Nauvoo-Caluso in the Class 8-2A State Tournament at Havana Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes held a 9-3 lead on Nauvoo-Caluso then pushed that to 18-8 at halftime. Nauvoo-Caluso came back with an 11-9 third quarter but T-town finished with a 7-5 final period.

The Wooden Shoes were led by Anna Probst with 13 and Malea Helmink with seven. T-town finished the season with a 30-0 record.

The third place game went to Mendon Unity over Wenona Fieldcrest, 36-11.

There will be a Welcome Home Celebration for both Teutopolis girls teams that went to State. It wil be held this Sunday at the Teutopolis Junior High School. Everyone is welcome to TJHS for photographs from noon to 1 p.m. A fire truck ride through town will start at 1 p.m.
