T-town Downs St. A; N. Clay, C'land, Newton Win In Girls Basketball

Teutopolis High School easily handled Effingham St. Anthony, 62-32 in girls basketball action heard on KJ Country 102.3 Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 19-10 opening quarter lead as Kaitlyn Schumacher knocked in three baskets and was three of six at the line for nine points while Emily Konkel scored six points.

Lucy Fearday kept the Bulldogs close, scoring eight of her team's 10 points.

T-town then pushed ahead 37-21 at halftime with an 18-11 run. Schumacher continued her onslaught with seven points while Zoe Cremens nailed a three-pointer and Kaylee Niebrugge scored six.

The Wooden Shoes then had a 25-11 second half for the final tally and improved to 6-2.

Schumacher finished with 20 points on eight field goals and four free throws. Also in double figures was Niebrugge with 10. Cremens finished with nine points on three trifectas. Isabella Hardiek led the way in rebounds with nine while Niebrugge pulled down seven. Niebrugge and Konkel led in steals with six each. Joleen Deters and Konkel had two assists each. Konkel led in blocks with three. 

The Bulldogs were led by Fearday with 21 points on seven field goals and seven of 10 at the line. St. Anthony drops to 7-4 on the season.

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) played host to Altamont and picked up a 46-39 victory as two National Trail Conference teams met Monday.

The Cardinals held a 14-13 first quarter lead and moved that to 25-19 at halftime. Altamont came back with an 11-8 third period to pull within 33-30 but North Clay got back on track with a 13-9 final period as Kristen Allen connected on three baskets and the Cardinals hit seven of 10 from the free throw line.

North Clay had three players hit double digits. Allen led the way with 18 points on eight field goals that included one three-pointer and was one of two at the ilne. Alexis VanDyke and Miah Ballard added 10 points each.

Altamont was led by Grace Nelson with 18 points on seven field goals, one of those a three-pointer, and three of four at the line. Peyton Osteen added eight points.

At Decatur

Cumberland continues to roll along. Its latest victim was Lutheran School Association of Decatur by a 67-43 count Monday evening.

The Pirates ran off to a 17-6 opening quarter lead as Zoe Mitchell scored eight points. The lead went to 32-17 at halftime this time behind Sage Carr's two three-pointers.

Cumberland had a 35-26 second half for the win. Three players hit double figures for the Pirates. Carr and Mitchell tallied 16 each while Abbie Becker added 15. The Pirates improved to 9-2 on the season. With one more victory, Cumberland will reach the double digit mark, something that hasn't happened since the 2011-12 season.

Newton traveled to Red Hill (Bridgeport) and picked up a 46-22 win Monday evening.

The Eagles ran out to a 16-4 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Two players connected for double figures. Leading the way was Sydney Dobbins with 14 points. She knocked in four three-pointers in the contest. Camryn Martin added 10 points. Martin had two three-pointers.

Ava Kessler and Amber Russell pulled down 10 rebounds each. Alexis Hetzer, Elle Bennett and Addy O'Dell had three steals each. Bennett finished with three assists.

Newton improves to 4-8 on the season.

Newton also claimed the junior varsity contest, 50-10. Leading the way was Martin with 13 and O'Dell with 11. The JV improves to 5-2.
