St. Michael, T-town Eighth-Grade Girls Advance To Title Games

Class 8-1A
In the Class 8-1A State Tournament at Clinton Junior High School, Sigel St. Michael tallied two wins and will be playing for the State championship Thursday.
In the opening contest, the Sharpshooters defeated Ottawa Wallace, 50-35. St. Michael edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead and led 22-19 at halftime.
The Sharhpshooters then had a 28-16 second half. Nancy Ruholl scored 29 points for the winners, connecting on 11 field goals that included two three-pointers, and was five of nine at the line.
Brooklyn Will chipped in with eight points.
In other first round scores, Danville Schlarman defeated Mount Olive, 41-25, LSalle Trinity Catholic edged Peoria Heights St. Thomas, 31-27 and Cissna Park won over Washington St. Patrick, 40-31.
In the semifinal contest, St. Michael defeated Danville Schlarman, 56-26.
The Sharpshooters trailed Schlarman 11-8 after the opening quarter but moved ahead 21-13 at halftime then had a 35-13 second half.
Ruholl scored 21 this time around while Cara Hatton added 15.
In other the semifinal game, Cissna Park handily beat LaSalle Trinity, 48-12,
Sigel St. Michael (24-1) will face Cissna Park (24-0) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the championship. Danville Schlarman meets LaSalle Trinity Catholic at 6 p.m. for third place.

Class 8-2A State Tournament
Teutopolis competed in the Class 8-2A State Tournament at Havana High School Saturday.
The Wooden Shoes edged Mount Pulaski in the second game of the morning, 31-30.
Mount Pulaski held a 7-6 opening quarter lead but T-town came back to lead 15-13 at hafltime. T-town then had a 25-22 lead going into the final quarter. The final period was exciting as Mount Pulaski had an 8-6 run but the Shoes got out of the contest with the one-point victory.
Kelsey Niemerg led the Shoes with 11 points while Anna Probst chipped in with eight.
In other games, Mendon Unity defeated Paris Crestwood 31-17, Wenona Fieldcrest edged Peoria St. Philomena, 32-30 and Nauvoo-Colusa downed Lockport Kelvin Grove, 48-14.
In the semifinal contest, T-town had another exciting contest. The Shoes trailed Mendon Unity 11-2 after the opening quarter and then held Unity scoreless in the second period to pull within 11-7 at halftime.
The Shoes still trailed going into the final period by a 16-13 count and came on like gangbusters with a 14-7 run for the 27-23 win.
Probst tallied nine while Allie Ruholl and Malea Helmink had five each.
In the other game, Nauvoo-Colusa edged Wenona Fieldcrest, 32-30.
T-town advances with a 29-0 record to face Nauvoo-Colusa with a 16-2 mark at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the State championship.
