EHS, Dieterich Capture Girls Basketball Victories

TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School handed Taylorville a 38-34 loss in girls Apollo Conference basketball action Tuesday evening.

The Hearts took a 15-6 opening quarter lead as Madison Mapes connected on two three-point baskets, Ella Niebrugge a trifecta and Meredith Schaefer scored five points.

The Tornadoes came back with a 9-2 second period run to pull within 17-15 at halftime. The lone basket for the Hearts came from Schaefer.

Both teams scored 10 points in the third period as Schaefer connected on eight of those 10 points. Then in the final period, the Hearts controlled the contest with an 11-9 run for the four-point win.

Schaefer finished with 18 points while Mapes added nine.

At Dieterich

Dieterich tallied a 56-34 non-conference victory over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville Tuesday evening.

Three players scored in double digits for Dieterich. Ruby Westendorf led the way with 18 points while Madelyn Brummer tallied 15 and Cortney Brummer 10.

The Movin' Maroons took a 16-7 opening quarter lead and led 29-14 at halftime. OPH came back with an 11-7 third period but the Maroons finished out strong with a 20-9 final quarter.

Westendorf connected on eight field goals and two of three from the line. M. Brummer hit seven field goals and one of two at the line while C. Brummer connected on three field goals, including one three-pointer and was three of four at the line.
