CHBC Wins Own Girls Tourney, Neoga Wins Twice At Shootout

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City claimed the championship of its own Thanksgiving Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

 

The Bobcats downed Dieterich, 43-26 for the title. CHBC opened with a 10-6 first quarter lead and led 22-16 at halftime. CHBC had a 4-2 third quarter and put together a 17-8 final period for the win.

Lani Morrison led the way with 16 points while Madison Wojcik added 11. Ruby Stuckemeyer led in rebounds with eight while Gracie Heckert had eight steals and three assists. CHBC connected on 20 of 30 free throws.

Dieterich was led by Madilyn Brummer with eight points.

In the third place contest, Cumberland downed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 43-30.

The Pirates edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead. Cumberland still held a two-point lead at halftime, 27-25.

Both teams tallied six in the third period before Cumberland ripped out to a 16-5 final quarter for the winning margin.

Zoe Mitchell led the way for Cumberland with 19 points while Abbie Becker added 13. Sage Carr led in rebounds with 10 and assists with seven. Becker led in steals with three.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Ella Kinkelaar with 10 points and Samantha Hayes with nine. 

In the fifth place game, Brownstown/St. Elmo handed Red Hill (Bridgeport) a 51-26 loss.

BSE took a 22-18 halftime lead then had a 12-0 third quarter run as Sidney Stine tallied eight of those points. The Bombers finished out with a 17-8 final period.

Three players hit double digits for the winners. Laney Baldrige and Stine tallied 14 points each while Audrey Wilhour added 12.

In the seventh-place contest, Macon Meridian was a 48-32 winner over Ramsey.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Most Valuable Player Gracie Heckert (CHBC), Kaitlyn Boerngen (Dieterich), Lani Morrison (CHBC),  Zoe Mitchell (Cumberland), Courtney Brummer (Dieterich), Abbie Becker (Cumberland), Ella Kinkelaar (WSS) and Laney Baldrige (BSE).

Mary Sur Shootout

The Neoga girls squad captured two victories at the Mary Sur boys and girls shootouts Friday and Saturday.

In the first game, Neoga easily handled Arthur Christian, 50-19. The Indians stepped out to a 12-0 opening quarter lead and led 26-7 at halftime.

Sydney Richards tallied 19 for the winners while Allison Worman added 10.

In the second contest, Neoga again had an easy victory, this time over Georgetown Ridge Farm, 55-16.

The Indians ripped out to a 20-2 opening quarter lead and that was the game.

Richards led the way with 15 points while Avery Fearday added 11 and Trista Moore with 10.

Neoga improved to 3-1 and will host Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg today.
