SEB Wins Mulberry Grove Tourney Crown, CHBC Third

MULBERRY GROVE -- St. Elmo/Brownstown was crowned the champion of the Mulberry Grove FNC Community Bank Boys Basketball Turkey Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles handed Father McGivney a 75-53 loss in the championship game.

Father McGivney took the early lead, heading out to a 19-17 opening quarter. In that run, Father McGivney knocked in three trifectas and was four of four at the line.

Caleb Campbell kept the Eagles close with five points.

Then in the second period, the Eagles got untracked and ripped off a 24-11 tally to lead 41-30 at halftime. In that run Gavyn Smith knocked in three regular baskets and two free throws for eight points while Adam Atwood contributed five points and Campbell a three-pointer.

SEB kept the momentum going with a 19-14 third period to lead 60-44 and finished out strong with a 15-9 final quarter.

Four players finished in double figures for the Eagles. Smith tallied 27 on 12 field goals and three of six at the line. Atwood added 13, Campbell 11 and Jarrett Pasley 10.

Atwood pulled down 10 rebounds while Brady Maxey had nine. Atwood finished with three steals. Pasley had three assists. SEB hit 51 percent from the field and 55 percent from the line.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City captured third place with a 61-57 win over Mount Olive.

The Bobcats trailed Mount Olive 16-10 after the opening quarter but came back to pull ahead 32-30 at halftime. Waylon Robertson scored a three-pointer in the first quarter then tallied seven in the second period. Kade Persinger led the way in the second quarter with nine points hitting three field goals that included two trifectas.

Mount Olive came back to move ahead 45-44 in the third quarter but CHBC went on a 17-12 final period to pull out the win.

Four players hit double digits for the Bobcats. Persinger led the way with 14 points while W. Robertson and Wes Radloff tallied 14 each and Silas Buzzard added 10.

In the fifth place contest, Patoka won over Mulberry Grove, 44-35. The seventh place game went to Ramsey over Lebanon, 44-36.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Most Valuable Player Trent Markezich (Mount Olive), Gavyn Smith (SEB), Ashton Mersinger (Father McGivney), Drew Belcher (Patoka), Adam Atwood (SEB), Charlie Reiss (Ramsey), Caleb Campbell (SEB), Darren Luchetti (Father McGivney), Jaden Robertson (CHBC) and Jackson Rodgers (Father McGivney).
