Newton Wins Cumberland Tourney, WSS Second At Cerro Gordo

TOLEDO -- Newton High School captured the championship of the Cumberland Boys Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles took on Casey-Westfield in the title contest and won, 46-40.

Newton edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead but Casey-Westfield came back to knot the score at halftime, 15-15. Both teams tallied 11 points in the third period. The Eagles then pulled out the victory with a 20-11 final period. Evan Schafer went on a tear, scoring eight points.

E. Schafer led the way with 14 points while Mason Schafer chipped in with 10.

Newton is now 3-0 on the seadon and is back in action Tuesday at Salem.

In the third place contest, Cumberland handed North Clay (Louisville) a 48-40 loss.

The Pirates moved into an 11-9 opening quarter lead behind Gavin Hendrix' seven points. Cumberland held a 20-11 first half lead.

North Clay came back to outscore Cumberland 29-28 in the second half but couldn'tt make up the first half deficit.

Cumberland had three players in double figures. Gavin Hendrix led the way with 12 while Jaxon Boldt added 11 and Elijah McElravy 10.

North Clay was led by Alex Boose with 10 and Bryton Griffy and Logan Fleener with eight each.

In the fifth place contest, Okaw Valley edged Vandalia, 64-51.

The seventh place game went to Dieterich over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville, 63-47.

The two teams scored 11 points in the opening quarter before the Maroons edged ahead 29-26 at halftime on the scoring of Bryce Budde. Budde knocked in three trifectas and connected on four of four at the line for 13 of his team's 18 points.

In the third period, Dieterich widened the margin by 51-41 as Budde continued with six points and Britton had 10.

Budde finished with 31 points for the winners on 11 field goals that included three trifectas and was six of six at the line. Also in double figures were Westendorf with 14 and Britton with 13.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Most Valuable Player Evan Schafer (Newton), Logan Fleener (North Clay), Cole Gilbert (Casey-Westfield), Bryce Budde (Dieterich), Chase Laack (Vandalia), Tyson Montgomery (Okaw Valley), Gavin Hendrix (Cumberland), Mason Schafer (Newton), Trevin Magee (Cumberland) and Rece Overbeck (Casey-Westfield).

Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg placed second at the Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament Saturday.

In the championship game, Cerro Gordo-Bement edged the Hatchets, 65-60.

WSS stepped out to an 18-12 opening quarter lead and led 35-26 at halftime. Cerro Gordo-Bement came back with a 21-13 third period to pull within 48-46 going into the final quarter then had a 19-12 run to pull out the win.

Three players scored in double figures for Windsor/Stew-Stras. Austin Wittenberg led the way with 24 points while Samuel Vonderheide added 20 and Jordan Wittenberg 12.

Austin Wittenberg and Vonderheide were named to the All-Tournament Team.

LeRoy won the third place game over Tri-Valley, 40-36. The fifth place contest went to LSA over Shelbyville, 67-60. Heritage claimed seventh place with a 46-28 victory over Blue Ridge and Heyworth was the ninth place finisher with a 75-66 win over University High.
