Shoes in Championship at St. Anthony, Hearts Play for 3rd, Bulldogs in First of Four Saturday; Other Friday Scores

St Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament
The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes advanced to the championship game of the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament Friday with a 43-34 win over the Mattoon Green Wave. Meanwhile, the Effingham Hearts downed the St. Anthony Bulldogs 48-30 in the final game of the day. Both contests were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. The game was also videtaped so watch for it soon on social media.
Teutopolis led most of their game, but it was never easy, up 9-6 after one quarter, in front 17-14 at halftime, and up 28-26 after three quarters before finally outscoring the Green Wave 15-8 in the final quarter to account for the nine-point win.
The Shoes shot 36% from the field, making 17 of 46 shots including 3 of 14 threes. They made six of eight foul shots, grabbed 23 rebounds and committed 15 turnovers.
Mattoon made 13 of 36 shots, 36% including one of six threes. The Wave made 7 of 11 foul shots, turned the ball over 21 times and grabbed 19 rebounds.
Caleb Siemer led Teutopolis with 12 points, and Brendan Niebrugge was also in double figures with 10. Also for the Shoes: Kayden Althoff 9, and Max Niebrugge, James Niebrugge and Mitch Althoff with 4 each.
Cooper Bergstrom led Mattoon with 12 points.
Teutopolis is 3-0 in the tournament and on the season and will play Breese Central at 7:30pm for the championship.
The Effingham vs St. Anthony was close early. The Hearts led 11-9 after one quarter, and 21-15 at halftime, but a 16-7 Hearts run in the third quarter made it a 37-22 game. Effingham outscored St. Anthony 11-8 in the final quarter to post the 18-point victory.
Effingham made 15 of 40 shots, 38%, including 6 of 19 threes. The Hearts made 10 of 14 foul shots, turned the ball over just nine times and pulled down 28 rebounds.
St. Anthony shot just 29% from the field, 12 of 41, including 3 of 11 threes. The Bulldogs made 3 of 7 free throws, committed 12 turnovers and grabbed 23 rebounds.
Garrett Wolfe led Effingham with 16 points. Dalton Fox was also in double figures with 11 points and led the Hearts with six rebounds. Also for Effingham: Jett Volpi 8, Brayden Pals 6, Ethan Ritz 4, and Andrew Splechter 3.
Kyle Stewart led St. Anthony with 10 points and Craig Croy scored 9. Also for St. Anthony: Griffin Sehy, Adam Rudibaugh and Max Koenig 3 each, and Will Hoene 2.
Effingham improved to 2-1 in the tournament and on the season, while St. Anthony is now 0-3 on the campaign.
