Cumberland, Newton Victorious at Cland Tourney

Cumberland and Newton were winners at the Cumberland Boys Basketball Turkey Tournament Tuesday evening.

Cumberland edged Vandalia, 64-63. The Pirates held a 15-9 opening quarter lead but Vandalia roared back with a 29-10 second period to lead 38-25 at half time. Then it was the Pirates who took the upper hand in the third quarter and pulled within 44-41.

In the final period, Cumberland came back to knot the score at 58-58 sending the game into overtime. In the overtime period, Cumberland connected on four of seven free throws while Jaxon Boldt hit the lone basket and the Pirates pulled out the win.

Gavin Hendrix led the way for Cumberland with 18 points while Trevin Magee chipped in with 15, Boldt tallied 14 and Maddox McElravy added 12.

Newton had a big scoring second quarter and went on to beat Dieterich, 76-41.

The Eagles led 14-11 after the opening quarter then had a 25-8 second period run and never looked back.

Mason Schafer led the way for the Eagles with 21 points on nine field goals that included two three-pointers and one of three at the line. Also in double figures was Evan Schafer with 16. Mason Mulvey, Weston Tharp and Ben Meinhart had seven each.

Dieterich was led by B. Budde with 13, C. Gephart with nine and L. Westendorf with eight.

Cumberland and Newton advance in winner bracket action to face each other at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Dieterich and Vandalia drop into the consolation bracket and will meet at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

In other games Friday, Casey-Westfield faces North Clay (Louisville) at 6 p.m. in winner bracket play while OPH meets Okaw Valley in consolation bracket action at 3 p.m.

The tournament closes out Saturday with the seventh place game at 1:30 p.m., the consolation championship at 3, the third place game at 4:30 and the championship at 6.

Mulberry Grove Tournament

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City opened play in the Mulberry Grove FNB Community Bank Turkey Tournament with a victory Tuesday evening.

CHBC was an 85-58 winner over Ramsey in the final contest of the evening. In the opener, Mount Olive defeated Lebanon 63-24 and the second game went to Father McGivney over Patoka, 64-46.

CHBC took a 25-8 opening quarter lead behind the scoring of Jadon Robertson with nine points while Kade Persinger added five and Waylon Robertson four.

The Bobcats led 41-23 at halftime as J. Robertson knocked in a three-pointer and a free throw while Persinger had two baskets and two free throws.

CHBC had a 21-15 third quarter and fniished out with a 23-20 final quarter.

J. Robertson finished with a total of 31 points on 10 field goals that included two three-pointers and was nine of 12 at the line. Also in double figures was Persinger with 15, W. Robertson with 13 and Silas Buzzard with 11.

The tournament continues tonight with St. Elmo/Brownstown against Lebanon at 5:15, CHBC taking on Patoka at 6:45 and Mulberry Grove meeting Mount Olive at 8:15. Father McGivney leads the way with a 2-0 record followed by St. Elmo/Brownstown 1-0, CHBC 1-0, Mulberry Grove 1-0, Mount Olive 1-1, Patoka 0-1 and Ramsey 0-2.

Cerro Gordo Tournament

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg successfully opened its run in the Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament with a 61-34 win over Shelbyville Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets trailed Shelbyville 15-13 after the opening quarter but came back to lead 22-19 at halftime. WSS then had a 24-7 third quarter run and that was the game.

Samuel Vonderheide led the way for the Hatchets with 23 points on eight field goals that included one trifecta and six of 10 at the line. Austin Wittenberg added 15 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer.

The Hatchets will be back in action Friday against Heritage at 10:30 a.m. and Tri-Valley at 4:30 p.m.

In other scores Tuesday, Tri-Valley defeated Heritage 75-23, Heyworth won over Blue Ridge 68-28, LSA downed University High 73-46 and Cerro Gordo-Bement defeated LeRoy 70-57.
