Shoes Win, Hearts Drop Close One At St. A Tourney

The Effingham St. Anthony Boys Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament had three games on tap in Tuesday evening action.

In the opener, Mattoon defeated Rantoul, 66-44.

Breese Central edged Effingham in the second contest, 37-35. The Hearts moved out to a 6-4 opening quarter lead as Jett Volpi and Garrett Wolfe knocked in a three-pointer each.

The Hearts held a 19-16 halftime lead, hitting three more trifectas as Volpi and Wolfe put in a second shot and Ethan Ritz connected.

But Breese Central outscored the Hearts in the third quarter to knot the score at 24-24. At one point, the Hearts were down by seven but clawed back. Breese Central took a 37-35 lead with around five seconds on the clock. The Hearts took the ball with 2.6 seconds, got the ball inbounds but the last shot fell short.

The Cougars didn't have a player in double figures but did have even scoring as Brady Moore tallied nine while Cody Dickshot and Mason Hamon added eight each.

The Hearts were led by Volpi with 15 and Wolfe with nine.

In the final game of the evening, Teutopolis started slow but built up steam and downed Highland, 52-44.

Highland stepped out to a 13-2 opening quarter lead. The lone basket for the Shoes was by Brendan Niebrugge.

But the Wooden Shoes got untracked and had a 20-11 second period run to trail only 24-22 at halftime. B. Niebrugge stepped up with eight points on a three-pointer, two regular baskets and a free throw. Caleb Siemer chipped in with seven points.

T-town then took control with a 16-10 third period run to lead 38-34 going into the final quarter and had a 14-10 final period.

B. Niebrugge finished with 18 points while Siemer chipped in with 13. Max Niebrugge added nine.

T-town is 2-0 in the tourney while Mattoon and Breese Central are 1-0, St. Anthony, Effingham and Highland 0-1 and Rantoul 0-2.

The tournament continues tonight with Highland against Mattoon at 5 p.m., Effingham taking on Robinson at 6:30 and St. Anthony meeting Breese Central at 8.

Friday's games will have Robinson against Breese Central at 3 p.m., T-town facing Mattoon at 4:30, Rantoul against Highland at 6 and St. Anthony and Effingham meeting at 7:30.

The tourney comes to a close Saturday with the seventh-place game at 3 p.m., fifth place at 4:30, third place at 6 and championship at 7:30.
