St. A, Altamont, T-town Claim Girls Basketball Wins

DIETERICH -- St. Anthony High School opened the girls basketball season with a 51-36 win over Dieterich Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 16-10 opening quarter lead as Lucy Fearday knocked in three baskets. Dieterich pulled the lead down to five at halftime, 25-20 but the Bulldogs got back on track in the second half.

St. Anthony has a 12-4 third quarter with Fearday scoring eight points and Abbi Hatton knocked in two baskets and the Bulldogs had a 14-12 final quarter.

Fearday tallied 21 points on eight field goals and five of nine at the line. Grace Karolewicz and Hatton scored eight each.

Kaitlyn Boerngen scored 10 of the Movin' Maroons 12 points in the final period and finished with 19. Dieterich drops to 0-2 on the season.

St. Anthony was a 15-13 winner in junior varsity action. Stacie Vonderheide led with six. Dieterich was led by  Miley Britton with four.

At Altamont

Altamont opened its season with a bang, trouncing Vandalia, 83-57 Tuesday evening.

The Indians edged out to a 16-14 opening quarter lead as Grace Nelson scored 10 points while Peyton Osteen and Skylie Klien had a three-point basket each.

Vandalia pulled within 33-32 at halftime but Altamont kicked it into high gear with a 50-25 second half.

Nelson connected on 15 field goals that included four three-pointers and was eight of 10 at the line for 42 points. Osteen tallied 15 on six field goals that included three trifectas and Claire Boehm scored 10 on two three-pointers and four of six at the line.

The Indians knocked in 12 three-pointers in the contest.

Altamont also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 33-24.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis pounded out 61 points in its season opening victory over Newton, 61-19 Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes ripped out to a 14-0 opening quarter lead as Emily Konkel connected on three baskets. T-town held a 25-4 halftime lead and led 42-10 after three quarters.

No player finished in double figures for the Shoes, but there was even scoring up and down the lineup as Kaitlyn Schumacher, Isabella Hardiek and Kaylee Niebrugge scored nine each while Zoe Cremens and Konkel had eight each.

Leading T-town in rebounds was Niebrugge with eight and Schumacher with seven. Schumacher led in steals with six and Grace Tegeler had five. Tegeler led in assists with four.

Newton was led by Camryn Martin with eight points.

At Cerro Gordo

Cerro Gordo edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 33-31 in the season-opener Tuesday.

The teams were tied at 10-10 after the opening quarter before Cerro Gordo moved ahead 20-14 at halftime and held a 29-19 lead going into the final period.

The Hatchets came roaring back in the final quarter with a 12-4 run only to fall short.

Ella Kinkelaar led the way for WSS with 15 points while Morgan Mathis added eight.
