CHBC, Neoga, C'land Nab High School Girls Basketball Season Openers

FARINA -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City opened the girls high school basketball season with a 68-61 win over South Central as the two National Trail Conference teams clashed Monday evening.

The Bobcats took a 17-10 opening quarter lead and led 35-27 at halftime. CHBC had a slight 16-15 third quarter before South Central made a comeback in the final period only to fall short.

Gracie Heckert led the way for the Bobcats with 24 points, connecting on 10 field goals, three of those trifectas, and one of two at the line. Lani Morrison also hit the double digit mark with 17 points with seven field goals and three of six at the line. Marissa Summers chipped in with 14 on five field goals and two of four at the line.

The Cougars were led by three players in double figures. Laney Webster tallied 19 points while Halle Smith finished with 15 and Brooklyn Garrett had 14.

CHBC also claimed the junior varsity contest, 38-21.

At Moweaqua

Neoga held off Moweaqua Central A&M, 42-35 in the season opener Monday evening.

Neoga held a 10-5 opening quarter lead but Central A&M came back to pull within 23-19 at halftime. Neoga got back on track with a 12-7 third period then held off Central A&M in the final quarter.

Sydney Richards connected on seven field goals for 14 points to lead the Indians. Trista Moore chipped in with seven.

Haylee Campbell pulled down 11 rebounds while Allison Worman had eight and S. Richards six. Richards also had five blocks and three steals.

Cumberland tallied a 51-28 victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo Monday evening.

The Pirates edged out to an 11-8 opening quarter lead then pushed into high gear with a 15-5 second quarter to lead 26-13 at halftime. Cumberland had a 25-15 second half.

Z. Mitchell tallied 17 while J. Carr and K. Shoemaker scored 10 each for the Pirates.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Laney Baldrige with nine.

Robinson traveled to Dieterich and picked up a 49-34 victory over the Movin' Maroons in the season-opener Monday evening.

Dieterich won the junior varsity contest, 43-28.
