Hearts Close Out Season With Win, T-town Beats Mt. Zion

The Effingham High School girls basketball team closed out its season in style, outscoring Mattoon 22-12 in the third quarter on 10-of-11 shooting to take the lead and fight for the 51-47 win the rest of the contest.

 

Effingham was down 15-7 after the first quarter, then held Mattoon to a 9-9 second quarter standoff to trail 24-16 at halftime. The third quarter put the Lady Hearts up 38-36 and Effingham outscored Mattoon 13-11 in the final quarter to post the four-point win.

Effingham finished 21 of 37 from the field for the game, 57%, including 2 of 5 threes; Effingham made 7 of 12 free throws, grabbed 22 rebounds and committed 17 turnovers.

Mattoon shot 36% from the field, 19 of 53, including 7 of 20 threes. Mattoon made 2 of 6 foul shots, pulled down 25 rebounds and turned the ball over 10 times.

Annie Frost led Effingham with 17 points, 12 in the second half, on 8 of 11 shooting with nine rebounds. Madison Mapes stepped up with 13 points on four of eight shooting.

Also for Effingham: Sawyer Althoff 9, Taylor Armstrong 6, and Peyton Budde and Meredith Schafer 3 each; Mallory Ramage led Mattoon with 21 points. Effingham had defeated the Lady Green Wave at Mattoon 40-35 on February 6.

Effingham closed out the season with seven wins.

At Mount Zion

Teutopolis stepped out to an early opening quarter lead and went on for a 52-32 victory over Mount Zion Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes' Lexie Niebrugge nailed two three-pointers while Kaylee Niebrugge hit two baskets and two free throws in the opening quarter 14-10 run. The Shoes led 23-14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, L. Niebrugge scored nine points while Kaitlyn Schumacher tallied six in the third quarter 20-7 run and the Shoes led 43-21.

L. Niebrugge scored 22 points for the Shoes while K. Niebrugge added 11.
