Bulldogs Drop Loss, Shoes, Indians, Pirates Capture Boys Victories

Effingham St. Anthony ran into Macon Meridian and fell Monday evening, 73-69 in boys high school basketball action.

The Bulldogs got off to a good start with a 21-15 opening quarter run as Logan Antrim connected on four baskets for eight points and Grant Nuxoll put together a three-pointer and two baskets for seven.

But Meridian started a comeback in the second quarter to pull within 35-34 at halftime. Graham Meisenhelter tallied 10 points out of the 15 for Meridian in the opening quarter and added four more in the second period.

Meridian continued its comeback with a 17-13 third quarter to lead 51-48 then continued in the fourth period with a 22-17 run top pull out the 73-65 victory.

Graham Meisenhelter finished with 34 points on 10 field goals and 13 of 17 at the line. Grant Meisenhelter tallied 17 points and Drew Hurelbrink 10.

St. Anthony was led by four players in double figures. Antrim finished with 17 while Nuxoll and Craig Croy scored 13 each and Kennan Walsh 11.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis had an up and down second half but came through with a 53-43 victory over Olney Monday.

The Wooden Shoes held a 28-18 halftime lead but had trouble in the third quarter. Olney came back with a 14-5 run to pull within a point a 33-32 going into the final quarter.

Then the Shoes found the range again and went on a 20-11 run to pull out the victory. Evan Wermert tallied seven points in that final quarter while Jordan Hardiek nailed two three-pointers and Brendan Niebrugge put in a three-pointer. Max Niebrugge added two free throws.

Wermert finished with 24 to lead the Shoes connecting on eight field goals, four of those three-pointers and was four if five at the line. Also in double figures was Hardiek with 14 connecting on four three-pointers and two of two at the line.

At Altamont

Altamont edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 55-51 in Monday evening competition.

The Hatchets edged out to an 11-9 opening quarter lead and led 35-21 at halftime. But Altamont started a comeback with a 7-6 third quarter and then went on a 27-10 final period run.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Kaden Eirhart and Mason Robinson led the way with 12 points each while Noah Klimpel chipped in with 10.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Austin Wittenberg with 23 and Samuel Vonderheide with 15. The Hatchets drop to 6-9 on the season.

Altamont also claimed the junior varsity game, 62-26.

Cumberland High School edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead then opened up to a 33-19 halftime tally before beating Hutsonville/Palestine, 49-33 Monday evening.

The Pirates' Brennyn Cutts had a big-scoring second quarter with 11 points.

Wyatt Napier scored steadily in each quarter to finish with 18 to lead Cumberland while Cutts tallied 17. Cutts nailed four three-pointers in theh game.
