Charleston Holds Off Hearts; Other High School Basketball

Charleston 46, Effingham 33 (the undefeated Lady Trojans were in a battle throughout the contest; Effingham grabbed an early five-point lead, but Charleston bounced back to take a 16-11 advantage after one quarter; Effingham rebounded in the second period, holding Charleston to four points to pull into a 20-20 halftime tie; the Lady Trojans opened up some space early in the third quarter but Effingham again battled back to get within 31-29 heading to the fourth quarter; Charleston finally got a double-digit lead and posted the 13-point win; both teams shot 34% from the field, the Lady Hearts 14 of 41 including 3 of 10 threes, and Charleston 20 of 58 including 2 of 15 threes; Charleston outrebounded the Hearts 33-29; Effingham turned the ball over 24 times to 15 times for Charleston; Shae Littleford led Charleston and all scorers with 22 points; Meredith Schaefer led Effingham with 11 points; also for the Lady Hearts: Annie Frost 8, Taylor Armstrong and Madison Mapes 5 each, and Sawyer Althoff 4; Effingham is now 5-9 on the season, and play their Senior Night game Tuesday night against St. Anthony)
