Bulldogs Down Cougars, WSS Hands Neoga Girls First Loss

Riley Guy must have eaten her Wheaties Wednesday as she guided Effingham St. Anthony to a 64-39 victory over South Central in girls high school basketball Wednesday.

 

Guy got the Bulldogs off in the right direction by hitting eight points in the opening quarter and St. Anthony moved ahead 15-10. Guy continued with eight more in the second period but the Cougars came on to pull within 28-25 at halftime.

The Bulldogs then had a 36-22 second half run as Guy tallied eight more points and finished with 21 to lead in scoring. Guy hit seven field goals and was 10 of 11 at the line.

Also in double figures were Lucy Fearday with 14 and Izzy Hakman with 10. Reese Jones was on the verge of double figures with nine.

South Central was led by three players with double points. Taegan Webster and Kayli Swift scored 12 each while Halle Smith added 10.

There were 51 free throws shot in the contest. The Bulldogs hit 20 of 28 while South Central was only nine of 23.

In junior varsity action, St. Anthony edged South Central, 42-39. Stacie Vonderheide had 17 for the Bulldogs. B. Garrett had 15 and B. Cowger 10 for South Central.

At Neoga

Neoga saw its unbeaten season come to an end with a 49-41 overtime loss to Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Wednesday as two National Trail Conference teams duked it out.

The Hatchets edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead and held that two-point lead at halftime, 20-18. WSS held a 30-27 lead going into the final quarter.

Neoga mounted a comeback and tied the score, sending the contest into overtime.

Windsor/Stew-Stras then got back on track and had a 12-4 run to pull out the victory.

Ella Kinkelaar led the Hatchets' charge with 20 points on seven field goals and five of eight from the line. Mikala Nichols added 14 and Hannah Hayes finished out the double figure performances with 10.

Neoga was led by Kylee Phillips with 12 and Audrey Ramert with 11. The Indians fall to 9-1 on the season and return to action today at Vandalia.

WSS, who improved to 5-4 on the season, will play host to Dieterich today.

North Clay (Louisville) easily handled Ramsey in a non-conference contest Wednesday, 62-33.

The Cardinals edged out to a 7-4 opening quarter lead then had a 24-7 second period run. Madi Lovett scored nine points in the quarter while Allison Czyzewski tallied five.

North Clay had a 20-7 third quarter surge. Czyzewsi added four more points as did Lovett. Lovett finished with 21 points while Czyzewski scored 13. Lovett connected on four three-pointers. Kristine Allen was a point away from double figures with nine.
