Hearts Defeat Bulldogs in Battle of Two City Schools

The Effingham Hearts won the battle of the city's two high school boys basketball teams Saturday, defeating the St. Anthony Bulldogs, 75-54. The game at the Enlow Center was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. C.J. videotaped the ballgame; it'll be up online on Sunday.

Other than an early two-point lead, Effingham led throughout the game, up 18-9 after one quarter, 36-25 at halftime, and 53-41 after three quarters, before outscoring the Bulldogs 22-13 in the final period. St. Anthony repeatedly made runs at the Hearts, though, until Effingham finally put the game away late in the contest.

Effingham shot 52% from the field, 27 of 52, including 6 of 20 threes. Effingham made 14 of 18 free throws, turned the ball over 10 times and grabbed 27 rebounds.

St. Anthony made 22 of 51 shots, 43%, including 5 of 20 threes. The Bulldogs were just 4 of 10 at the foul line, committed 19 turnovers, just six in the second half, and pulled down 29 rebounds.

Parker Wolfe led the Hearts and all scorers with 29 points on 10 of 20 shooting, making four threes, five of six foul shots, and grabbing five rebounds. Nate Thompson finished with 21 points on 7 of 13 shooting, hitting seven of eight free throws, and tying for the team lead with seven rebounds. Jacob Stoneburner was in double figures with 12 points on five of eight shooting and tied Thompson with seven rebounds. Also for Effingham: Dalton Fox 6, Garrett Wolfe 4, and Max Hardiek 3.

St. Anthony's one-two punch on offense was Kennan Walsh with 19 points and Logan Antrim with 18 points. Walsh was the early Bulldogs' threat, scoring 15 points in the first half, and finishing 8 of 16 from the field. He scored 11 points in the second quarter. Antrim scored 13 points in the second half and finished 7 of 13 from the field with a team-leading six rebounds. Also for St. Anthony: Seth Hotze 6, Grant Nuxoll and Craig Croy 5 points apiece, and Ty Wiedman 1. 

Effingham remains unbeaten on the season at 9-0. St. Anthony is now 4-2.

St. Anthony won the JV game, 58-45. Jonathan Willenborg led St. Anthony with 21 points, while Kyle Stewart added 10 points. For Effingham, Jett Volpi scored 11 points and Max Hardiek scored 10 points. Effingham won the fresh/soph game 43-34.
