Effingham St. Anthony tallied a 37-12 eighth-grade boys basketball win over Effingham Thursday while the Bullpups also claimed the seventh-grade contest, 52-23.

 

In eighth-grade action, the Bullpups stepped out to a 12-4 opening quarter lead and led 19-5 at halftime. Schmidt led the way for St. Anthony with 16 points.

Effingham was led by Belcher with all 12 of the Mustangs' points.

St. Anthony improves to 4-2 on the season.

In seventh-grade play, St. Anthony held a 22-10 halftime lead then had a 30-13 second half.

Lauritzen and Pennington led the way for St. Anthony with 17 and 16 points respectively.

Effingham was led by Wise with 10.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis picked up a couple of victories Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes leaped out to a 31-9 halftime lead on Charleston in seventh-grade action and went on for a 53-23 win.

Isaac McWhorter led the Shoes with 15 points while Joey Probst had 13.

In eighth-grade action, T-town was a 37-27 winner. The Shoes led 19-13 at halftime then had a 13-3 third quarter surge.

Jacob Bushur led the way for the Shoes with 13 points.

At Stew-Stras

Dieterich and Stewardson-Strasburg split wins in seventh- and eighth-grade play Thursday.

Dieterich was a winner in the seventh-grade contest, 39-32. Dieterich held a 12-4 opening quarter lead but Stew-Stras pulled within 24-22 in the third quarter. Dieterich then had a 15-10 final quarter.

B. Niemerg led in scoring with 16 while T. Niemerg added 12 for Dieterich.

Stew-Stras was led by Beals with 13 and Sayers with 11. Stew-Stras improved to 5-3.

In the eighth-grade contest, Stew-Stras held a 20-7 halftime lead. Dieterich moved within 27-20 at halftime and had a 16-14 final period but couldn't get over that first half by Stew-Stras.

Morris was unstoppable for the winners with 24 points on 11 field goals and two free throws. Gurgel added nine. Stew-Stras is now 5-2 on the season.

Dieterich was led by B. Niemerg with 14 and Westendorf with 12.
