Hearts Edge Braves, Shoes, Bobcats Win

MOUNT ZION -- It came down to a two-point contest and Effingham High School was the leader, pulling out a 49-47 Apollo Conference girls basketball win over host Mount Zion Thursday.

The two teams duked it out in the opening half. The Braves held a 15-11 opening quarter lead as Scharf and Shumate had five points each, both knocking in a three-pointer.

But the Hearts clawed back to move ahead 23-21 at halftime. EHS had a 12-6 run as Taylor Armstrong went to work, scoring seven points to tally 13 by halftime and Meredith Schaefer hit from three-point range.

In the third period, EHS continued to maintain control and moved ahead 37-33 going into the final quarter. Ella Niebrugge took over the scoring with a three-pointer, a regular basket and three free throws for eight points.

Niebrugge continued her scoring with six more points in the final quarter and the Hearts pulled out the two point victory.

Armstrong finished with 17 to lead the Hearts while Niebrugge chipped in with 14 and Frost added 11.

At Teutopolis

It didn't take the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis long to take control of their Apollo Conference matchup against Taylorville Thursday.

T-town ran off to a 17-5 opening quarter lead and led 31-9 at halftime. The Shoes went on to take a 59-21 victory.

Three players put together double digit scoring performances. Lexie Niebrugge led the way with 16 points while Kaylee Niebrugge added 13 and Kaitlyn Schumacher 11. Niebrugge connected on five field goals that included three trifectas.

Isabella Hardiek pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Shoes in that department while Zoe Cremens and K. Niebrugge had five each. L. Niebrugge, Grace Tegeler and Cremens led in steals with three each as the Shoes had a total of 12 steals in the contest. L. Niebrugge finished with two assists.

At Dieterich

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City started slow but got in a groove to take a 64-30 win over Dieterich as two National Trail Conference teams met Thursday.

CHBC held a 14-11 opening quarter lead then outscored the Movin' Maroons 50-19 over the next three quarters.

Gracie Heckert led the way for the Bobcats with 25 points. She hit nine field goals that included a whopping five three-pointers, and was two of two at the line. Mackenzie Bunch tallied 13. Carsen Burks led in rebounds with nine while Heckert and Mackenzie Bunch chipped in with seven each. Heckert had four steals and Burks three. Burks and Lani Morrison led in assists with four each.

Dieterich was led by Emily Bloemer with eight points.

The Maroons claimed the junior varsity game, 34-22.

Meridian picked up a 67-61 win over Shelbyville in Thursday competition.

Shelbyville held a 40-34 halftime lead but Meridian came back to move ahead 53-47 in the third quarter and went on for the victory.

Johnson led Meridian with 30 points while Giles and Wilson had 11 each.

Shelbyville was led by T. Wade with 24 and M. Wade with 18.
