Bulldogs Ride Big Fourth Quarter to Win Over Newton

The St. Anthony Bulldogs broke open a close game with a big fourth quarter on the way to a 57-36 boys basketball win over the Newton Eagles Saturday. The contest was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

 

It was a five-point game after three quarters, but St. Anthony outscored Newton 27-11 in the final period to post the big win. The Bulldogs were finally able to get the ball consistently inside to pull away in the last stanza, hitting 10 of 14 shots along the way.

St. Anthony led start-to-finish, but could never get away from the scrappy Eagles. It was 12-7 St. Anthony after one quarter, 24-18 at halftime, and 30-25 after three quarters.

The Bulldogs made 23 of 49 shots for the game, 47%, including 2 of 14 threes. St. Anthony made 9 of 15 free throws, but turned the ball over just eight times and grabbed 31 rebounds.

Newton made 42% of its shots, 15 of 36, including 3 of 12 threes. The Eagles made 2 of 6 foul shots, committed 16 turnovers and pulled down just 18 rebounds.

Logan Antrim led all scorers with 18 points for St. Anthony, while Grant Nuxoll was in double figures with 10 points. Also for St. Anthony: Kennan Walsh, Ty Wiedman and Seth Hotze six each, Mick Willenborg five, Craig Croy four, and James Schuette two.

Ben Meinhart led Newton with 11 points, all in the first half, while Mitchell Zumbahlen added 10 points. Also for Newton: Aaron Einhorn six, Evan Schafer five, and Mason Schafer and Leo Weber, two points each.

St. Anthony improved to 3-1 on the season, while Newton is now 2-3. 

St. Anthony won the JV game 52-14.
