Effingham St. Anthony split victories with Charleston in junior high boys basketball play Thursday.

 

The Bullpups fell in the seventh-grade contest, 31-30. St. Anthony edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead and led 18-16 at halftime. Charleston came back to lead 25-22 going into the final quarter. St. Anthony had an 8-6 run but still fell a point short.

Aiden Lauritzen led the Bullpups with 16 points.

In eighth-grade action, St. Anthony was an easy 53-32 winner. The Bullpups held a 27-15 halftime lead and led 43-28 going into the final period.

R. Schmidt led the way with 18 points while S. Link added nine. Seven other players scored in the contest. St. Anthony improved to 2-2.

At Mattoon

Effingham picked up two wins over Mattoon in Thursday evening action.

The Mustangs took a 13-0 opening quarter lead in seventh-grade play and led 19-7 at halftime. Effingham went on for a 28-15 second half for the 47-22 victory.

Phillips led Effingham with 14 points while Hayes added nine. EJHS is now 3-1 on the season.

Effingham then went overtime to edge Mattoon, 29-26. Mattoon held a 19-10 halftime lead and led 23-17 going into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs had a 9-3 fourth quarter run to tie the game. In the overtime period, Effingham had a 3-0 run.

Flack tallied 19 for the winners.

At Strasburg

Altamont and Stewardson-Strasburg split wins Thursday.

Altamont edged Stew-Stras in the seventh-grade matchup, 28-26. Stew-Stras led 20-17 going into the final quarter and Altamont came on with an 11-6 run to pull out the win.

Altamont was led by Veteto with 26 points. Stew-Stras (4-2) was led by Sayers with 12.

In eighth-grade action, Stew-Stras claimed a 44-12 win and is now 4-2 on the season.

Morris provided 18 points while Ben Bridges chipped in with 14.

Altamont was led by D. Bauer with four.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Effingham Sacred Heart were both winners Thursday.

Sacred Heart claimed the seventh-grade contest, 32-20. The Shamrocks held a 17-10 halftime lead and led 30-15 going in the final period for a 32-20 win.

Borries led Sacred Heart with 20 points while Swingler chipped in with eight.

CHBC was led by August Cozart with six.

In the eighth-grade contest, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City led 21-15 at halftime but Sacred Heart pulled within 26-23 going into the final period. CHBC then kept the Shamrocks scoreless while tallying eight points for a 34-23 victory.

CHBC was led by Kaidyn Calame with eight points and Kyle Lamb with seven.

Sacred Heart was led by Wallace with 12.
