EHS, Neoga Capture Girls Basketball Wins

Effingham High School played host to Lincoln in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Thursday evening and fell to the Railsplitters, 49-40.

Lincoln jumped on the Hearts in the opening quarter, ripping out to a 29-7 lead behind Kloe Froebe's 13 points. Froebe connected on five field goals that included three trifectas. Ryen Stoltzenburg nailed two three-pointers.

The Hearts then played Lincoln even in the second period as both teams tallied eight points. EHS had a 12-4 third quarter run to pull within 45-26 and then had a 14-4 final period but could never get over the first quarter surge.

Froebe tallied 29 points for the winners while Stoltzenburg added 12. Froebe finished with five three-pointers.

EHS was led by Annie Frost with 17. Frost connected on eight field goals and was one of two at the line.

At Newton

Neoga ran off to a 28-17 haltime lead and went on for a 60-34 non-conference win over Newton Thursday.

The Indians had a 17-7 third quarter.

Sydney Richards and Avery Fearday provided the one-two scoring punch with 14 and 13 points respectively. Richards added four rebounds and four steals while Audrey Ramert led in rebounds with nine, had six assists and three steals.

Neoga improved to 5-0 and will host Martinsville Saturday.

Newton was led by Whitney Zumbahlen with seven points and five rebounds. Ava Kessler had two steals. The Eagles drop to 2-2 on the season and will be back in action Saturday hosting St. Anthony at 1 p.m.

Newton claimed the junior varsity contest, 38-28.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis was within a point at halftime, but Charleston geared up in the third quarter with a 24-13 run and claimed a 67-56 Apollo Conference victory Thursday.

The Trojans edged out to a 17-14 opening quarter lead as Shae LIttleford scored eight points while Hannah Buescher tallied seven.

But T-town came back with a 10-8 run to pull within 25-24 at halftime. Lexie Nieburgge put in a three-pointer while Isabella Hardiek and Grace Tegeler had three points each and Kaylee Niebrugge tallied a free throw.

Charleston then came back with a 24-13 third period. Littleford continued her hot scoring with five baskets and a free throw for 11 points while Buescher provided four baskets including a three-pointer for nine points. The Trojans led 49-37 going into the final quarter.

T-town came back once again only to fall short. The Shoes had a 19-18 final period edge. T-town kept close in the contest with 21 of 33 free throws.

Charleston was led by Littleford with 29 points on 10 field goals and nine of 14 at the line. Buescher tallied 20 and Alycia Triplett 10.

T-town was led by L. Niebrugge with 19 on five baskets that included four three-pointers. Hardiek and K. Niebrugge had eight points each. Kaitlyn Schumacher pulled down eight rebounds while L. Niebrugge and Hardiek had six each. Hardiek had two steals.

Decatur LSA came calling and picked up a 44-41 victory over Cumberland Thursday.
