The Effingham Hearts fell to the Centralia Orphans in their first game of the postseason Wednesday, as Centralia took a big early lead en route to a 61-47 win over the Hearts at the Effingham 3A Regional Tournament.

Centralia exploded out of the gate and led the Hearts 27-6 after one quarter. Parker Wolfe scored the six points Effingham mustered in the quarter.

There was reason for hope in the second quarter, as Centralia scored just four points in the period while the Hearts scored 13 of their own to pull within 12, 31-19, at halftime.

Effingham outpointed the Orphans, 14-12, in the third period to pull within 10, 43-33, but Centralia bounced back to outscore the Hearts in the final quarter, 18-14, to win the game by 14 points.

Wolfe led Effingham with 25 points, including three threes and 10 points from the foul line. Also for Effingham: Nate Thompson 8, Jacob Stoneburner 4, Drew Thompson and Wyatt Jones 3 each, and Tate Niebrugge and Jackson Lee 2 apiece.

Centralia had three players in double figures; Jamie Long and Koby Wilmoth with 16 points each, and Tyree Westbrook with 13 points. Preston Johannes scored 8 points, and Walker and Reed 4 points each.

Centralia will take on Carbondale Friday at 7pm for the regional championship.

Effingham closes out the campaign with an 18-13 record and says goodbye to seniors Tate Niebrugge, Wyatt Jones and Dylan Ritz.
