Wooden Shoes Suffer Loss at Shelbyville Sectional

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes saw their season come to an end Wednesday with a loss to Breese Mater Dei, 63-46, in the semifinals of the Shelbyville Class 2A Sectional Tournament. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com. 

It was anybody's game through the first quarter as the Knights led the Shoes 12-11 at the end of the period. It was still a one-point game at halftime, as each team scored 10 points to leave Mater Dei in front at the break, 22-21.

As is often the case, though, the third quarter was the difference as Mater Dei outscored T-Town 18-5 in the period to take a 40-26 lead into the fourth quarter. The Knights outscored the Shoes 23-20 in the final period to win the game by 17 points. Mater Dei scored 15 of those fourth quarter points at the foul line.

Mater Dei shot 60% from the field, 18 of 30, including 6 of 12 threes. The Knights made 21 of 27 foul shots, turned the ball over 12 times, and pulled down 23 rebounds.

The Wooden Shoes made 36% of their shots, 17 of 47, including 10 of 26 threes. The Shoes only attempted six free throws and made two. T-Town committed 14 turnovers and grabbed 24 rebounds.

Luke Ungrund closed out his high school career with 20 points for Teutopolis, hitting 7 of 14 shots and made six threes. Also for the Shoes: Brock Deters 9, Jordan Hardiek 6, Evan Wermert 5, Mitch Hardiek and Matthew Deters 2 each, and Max Niebrugge and Evan Addis 1 apiece.

Mater Dei's Caleb Zurliene led all scorers with 27 points, while Jacob Schadegg scored 19 points. Also for the Knights: Mitchell Haake 8, Grant Goebel 7, and Zach Napovanice 2.

Mater Dei improved to 28-5 and will take on Alton Marquette Friday at 7pm for the sectional championship. Alton Marquette beat Marshall Tuesday night, 48-37.

Teutopolis finishes its season at 22-11 and says goodbye to seniors Luke Ungrund, Brock Deters and Mitch Hardiek.
