MARION -- If the game went three quarters instead of four, Effingham High School would have come out a winner in Tuesday evening's non-conference boys basketball contest against Marion.

Unfortunately for EHS, the third quarter proved to be its downfall in a 74-69 non-conference boys basketball loss.

The Hearts edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead as Drew Thompson took control, connecting on two baskets and three free throws for seven points. EHS then had a 20-16 second quarter to lead 32-27 at halftime. Thompson continued his hot scoring with two three-pointers and two free throws and had 15 by halftime

But here came Marion in the third quarter with a 26-16 run to lead 53-48 going into the final period. Jackson Connor had 17 points by halftime then went on a scoring exhibit in the third quarter with 16 points as he proved unstoppable. He finished with 44 to lead Marion while Franklin Horner added 13.

The two teams played to a 21-21 final period and the third period run proved fatal.

The Hearts were led by D. thompson with 36 on nine field goals that included six three-pointers and was 12 of 13 at the line. Brayden Pals was a point shy of double figures with nine. Starter Parker Wolfe did not make the trip due to the fact he was sick.

Effingham will have Senior Night Friday playing host to Taylorville before starting Class 3A regional play at home next week.

The junior varsity squad was a 74-40 winner. Jett Volpi tallied 30 while Braden Pals added 15.
