NTC Teams Dominate at Shootout, Area Boys Roundup

ALTAMONT -- National Trail Conference boys basketball teams nabbed four of the six games at the NTC vs. CIC shootout at Altamont High School Saturday.

A loss came in the first contest of the day as Sullivan downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 66-53.

In the second game, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg won over Hutsonville/Palestine, 71-44.

The Hatchets ran out to a 22-9 opening quarter lead  but Hutsonville/Palestine pulled within 38-31 at halftime. WSS then put the game away with a 22-4 third quarter.

Samuel Vonderheide led the way for the winners with 26 points while Jordan Wittenberg chpped in with 16. The Hatchets had seven three-pointers in the game. WSS improved to 12-16.

Hutsonville/Palestine dropped to 12-13 on the season.

In the third contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown edged Shelbyville, 56-52.

The two teams were tied at 12-12 after the first quarter with Shelbyville holding a 26-22 halftime lead. SEB then went on a tear with a 22-9 third period and held off the Rams in the final quarter.

Jaxson Tish tallied 21 points for the winners while Andy Goldsborough chipped in with 11. Goldsborough and Jacob Baron led in rebounds with nine each. Bryton Pruett had five assists.

Dieterich then pounded Mulberry Grove, 65-14. The Movin' Maroons had a 17-3 opening quarter lead and had a 32-7 first half.

Jack Westendorf and Collin Hartke led the Maroons with 13 points while Derek Kuhl added 12, Cory Gephart 11 and Cole Niebrugge 10.

North Clay (Louisville) then defeated Macon Meridian, 79-67.

The Cardinals edged out to a 14-13 opening quarter lead but Macon Meridian led 35-31 at halftime. North Clay then had a 21-15 third period then finished out with a 27-17 final quarter.

Five players ended in double figures for the winners. Lane Holkenbrink led the way with 23 points while Ethan Bible had 15, Luke Fleener and Ian Bailey had 13 each and Tyson Jones 10.

In the final contest, Tuscola edged Altamont 53-50 in overtime. No other information was provided.

At Ramsey

Neoga picked up a non-conference win over Ramsey in Saturday action, 55-28.

The Indians held a 9-6 opening quarter lead and led 22-18 at halftime. Neoga then put the game on ice with a 22--10 third period.

Three players scored in double figures for Neoga. Chase Banning tallied 18 while Trevor Roy had 15 and Paci McClure 10. Neoga had eight three-pointers led by Banning with four.

At Newton

Newton edged out to a 19-18 opening quarter lead and led 33-27 at halftime and had a 20-14 third period. Pana came roaring back only to fall short in the final quarter.

Kyle Schafer led the way with 20 points while Jarrett Tharp added 17 and Evan Schafer 11 for the winners. Schafer connected on five three-pointers as Newton hit nine in the contest. The Eagles improved to 17-12 on the season.

In junior varsity play, Newton was a winner, 41-35.

At Toledo

Cumberland came out a winner in a Saturday contest over LSA, 57-51.

The Pirates moved into a 23-20 halftime lead and led by only one going into the final quarter. Cumberland then had an 18-13 final period run to claim the win.

Brennyn Cutts led the way for the Pirates with 29 pionts. He connected on nine field goals that included six three-pointers and was five of seven at the line. Also in double figures were Wyatt Napier with 13 and Ross Hemmen with 11.
