Bulldogs, Hearts, Shoes All Win at Teutopolis Shootout

The St. Anthony Bulldogs posted a thrilling 50-49 win over the Central A&M Raiders Saturday in the feature game at the 2020 Teutopolis Shootout. Meanwhile, Effingham beat Paxton-Buckley-Loda 63-38, and the host team Teutopolis defeated Jerseyville 54-42 in a battle of the Reeder brothers, Teutopolis' Chet and Jerseyville's Stote. ST. ANTHONY 50, CENTRAL A&M 49

This was a battle between the 23-3 Bulldogs and the 24-2 Raiders, both ranked in the State Top 10 in Class 1A. 

The Bulldogs started slowly, but kept the Raiders within range, trailing 8-4 after one quarter and 22-18 at halftime. Central A&M still led 38-35 after three quarters, but the Bulldogs outscored the Raiders 15-11 in the fourth quarter to claim the one-point win.

Neither team led by more than seven points.

Neither team shot particularly well, although nasty defense might have been the main reason. St. Anthony shot 41% from the field, 19 of 46, including 3 of 10 threes. Central A&M shot 33% from the field, 20 of 60, including 4 of 21 threes. 

St. Anthony made just nine of 17 free throws, while Central A&M made 5 of 8. St. Anthony overcame 15 turnovers, while the Raiders turned the ball over just nine times. St. Anthony posted a narrow 29-27 rebounding edge. 

St. Anthony's Mr. Reliable, Jaccob Dust, posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Aaron Webb scored nine points, Logan Antrim, Jack Hoene and Jack Elder each scored seven points, and Kaden Fearday scored five points. Hoene grabbed nine rebounds.

Connor Heaton led Central A&M with 15 points, Brycen Burgener scored 14, and Jacob Paradee scored 10 points. Also for the Raiders, Griffin Andricks 5, Chris Enge 3, and Connor Hutchins 2.

The Bulldogs improve to 24-3, while the Raiders drop to 24-3.

EFFINGHAM 63, PAXTON-BUCKLEY-LODA 38

Against a team that entered the contest with a 24-3 record, the Hearts led start-to-finish.

It was 15-9 Hearts after one quarter, 29-19 at halftime, and 49-30 after three quarters before Effingham posted a 14-8 edge in the final period to win by 25 points.

Effingham shot 52% from the field, 22 of 42, including 8 of 18 threes. PBL shot 43%, 17 of 40, including 2 of 10 threes. The Hearts made 11 of 16 foul shots, to 2 of 9 for PBL. The Hearts committed 17 turnovers to 16 for the Panthers. Effingham had a whopping 30 to 13 rebounding edge.

Parker Wolfe had a big night for Effingham, scoring 28 points. Nate Thompson scored 15 points, and Drew Thompson scored 12 points. Jacob Stoneburner, Dylan Ritz, Garrett Wolfe and Jackson Lee each scored two points. 

Trey Van WInkle and Colton Coy each scored 12 points for PBL. 

Effingham improved to 16-11 on the season, while PBL is now 24-4. 

TEUTOPOLIS 54, JERSEYVILLE 42

Teutopolis led beginning to end in a real battle with the Panthers. The Shoes led 11-7 after one quarter, 24-15 at halftime, and 38-25 after three quarters before Jersey posted a 17-16 edge in the fourth quarter to account for the 12-point final margin.

After a tough first half shooting the ball, the Shoes hit 50% in the second half to finish 15 of 40 for the game for 38%, including 8 of 20 threes. Jerseyville made 17 of 47 shots, 36%, including 3 of 14 threes. The Shoes had a big edge at the foul line, making 16 of 24 to 5 of 6 for Jerseyville. In a rugged game, Teutopolis had just nine turnovers, just eight for Jerseyville. The Shoes outrebounded the Panthers 27-23. 

Luke Ungrund led Teutopolis with 19 points, while Evan Wermert posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Also for TTown: Matthew Deters 9, Brock Deters 6, Evan Addis 5, and Mitch Hardiek and Max Niebrugge 2 each.

Tucker Shalley led Jersey with 18 points, while Matthew Jackson added 14 points.

Teutopolis improved to 18-9 on the season, while Jerseyville is now 15-12.

Also Saturday at the Shootout, Mattoon defeated North Vigo Terre Haute 52-38 and Centralia beat Robinson 64-54.
