CLASS 2A NEWTON REGIONAL

Newton moved into the championship game of its own regional by downing Casey-Westfield 84-63 Wednesday evening.

The victory was revenge for two earlier seasons losses to the Warriors. Casey-Westfield won during the regular Little Illini Conference season over Newton then claimed the tournament championship with a victory over the Eagles.

But it was Newton who turned spoiler in this one. The Eagles edged out to a 22-19 opening quarter lead but here came the Warriors. Casey-Westfield had a 15-7 second period run to lead by five at halftime.

But Newton came back in the second half with a 55-29 run to move into the championship game.

Dylan Davidson led the Eagles with 27 points and eight assists. Luke Stone tallied 20 points and had eight rebounds. Keith Butler had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Eagles hit 25 of 40 field goals and were six of 14 from three-point range. They also connected on 16 of 22 free throws.

Brandon Wolfe led Casey-Westfield with 21 points while Trivette Scales added 16. The Warriors were 15 of 29 from two-point range, seven of 27 from the three-point line and 12 of 20 free throws.

Newton moves into the championship game against Robinson at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The gates will open at 5:55 p.m. Friday. The three-point showdown begins at around 6:05 p.m.

Newton fans will be able to buy tickets in the high school office beginning at noon today and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. There will be tickets available at the door Friday evening.
