Mattoon Drubs Lady Hearts in Apollo Conference

The Mattoon Lady Green Wave posted a 62-33 win over the Effingham Lady Hearts in Apollo Conference girls basketball action Thursday night. The contest was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

Mattoon scored early and often and led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter. A 22-10 edge in the second period put Mattoon in front 41-17 at halftime. After a 10-10 third quarter, Mattoon outscored the Lady Hearts 12-5 in the final stanza to win by 31 points.

Mattoon shot 54% from the field, making 28 of 52 shots, including 7 of 16 threes. The Lady Hearts made 15 of 37 shots, 41%, including 2 of 7 threes. Effingham turned the ball over 21 times to eight for Mattoon. Effingham held a slight 24-22 rebound edge.

There was only one free throws shot in the game, that by Mattoon, and the foul shot was missed, so no points in the game from the foul line.

Effingham's turnovers hampered any chance to stay in the game. Sawyer Althoff scored seven points, Annie Frost six, Hayley Diveley five, Ella Niebrugge and Taylor Armstrong four each, and Callie Feldhake, Katie Carie and Grace Bushur two points each.

Mattoon sophomore Mallory Ramage led the way with 24 points on 10 of 19 shooting, including four made threes. Delaney Bryant scored 20 points on 10 of 13 shooting.

Mattoon improved to 23-4, while Effingham slipped to 12-15.

Effingham won the JV game 44-33. Marissa Allie led Effingham with 11 points.
