Pirates Nab Tourney, Newton Consy Champs, T-town Picks Up Win

ARCOLA -- Cumberland HIgh School edged Villa Grove-Heritage, 63-61 to win the championship of the Lincoln Prairie Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

 

The Pirates and Villa Grove-Heritage were tied at 16-16 after the opening quarter. Cumberland moved ahead 32-27 at halftime. Cumberland then had a 17-10 third period but Villa Grove/Heritage came back in the final quarter with an 18-6 run to tie the game sending it into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Pirates' Brennyn Cutts knocked in a three-pointer while Ross Hemmen had an old-fashioned three point play and Wyatt Napier connected for a basket.

Those three players finished in double figures. Hemmen led the way with 25 points while Napier had 17 and Cutts 16.

In the third place contest, Okaw Valley won over Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond, 45-40. The consolation championship went to Decatur LSA over Tri-County, 71-62.

At Paris

Newton High School captured the consolation championship of the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Eagles held a 13-10 opening quarter lead but Lawrenceville came back to lead 27-23 at halftime and led 39-37 going into the final quarter.

Newton came to life with a 16-12 run to pull out the 53-51 victory.

Jarrett Tharp led three players in double figures with 17. Aaron Einhorn added 14 and Kyle Schafer 10.

In the championship game, Casey-Westfield won over Olney, 48-39. The third place game went to Marshall over Robinson, 69-57.

At Taylorville

Taylorville swept out to a 15-10 opening quarter lead on Teutopolis in action Saturday but the Wooden Shoes rallied for a 65-53 victory.

T-town tied the game at 31-31 at halftime then had a 22-11 third period and never looked back.

Evan Wemert tallied 25 points while Jordan Hardiek chipped in with 16. The Wooden Shoes hit 10 three-pointers in the game. Hardiek had five while Wermert added three.
