St. Anthony Wins NTC Tournament Crown

Effingham St. Anthony captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Tournament.

The St. Anthony Bulldogs won their fourth straight National Trail Conference boys basketball tournament championship Saturday night, defeating the Altamont Indians, 62-45. All 14 games of this year's tournament were heard on 979XFM and seen on www.979xfm.com. The games are still available on our YouTube channel.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 15-8 opening quarter lead behind Jaccob Dust's eight points. Dust connected on three baskets and was two of two at the line.

But the Indians came back with a 15-11 second quarter run to pull within 26-23 at halftime. Kaden Eirhart nailed a three-pointer and another basket for five.

St. Anthony got back on track in the third period as six players scored for a 41-33 lead going into the final period.

The Bulldogs then salted the contest away with a 21-12 final period run. In the quarter, St. Anthony connected on 12 of 16 from the line. Jack Hoene scored half of his team's points by hitting on two field goals and was six of six at the line for 10 ponits. Logan Antrim hit a three-pointer and was two of three at the line.

Four players hit double digits for the Bulldogs. Hoene led the way with 19 while Dust added 14 and Antrim and Kaden Fearday finished with 11 each.

Altamont was led by Aidan Jahraus with 17, 11 coming in the second half, and Eirhart with 13.

DIETERICH 48, NEOGA 41

In the third place contest, Dieterich nabbed a 48-41 win over Neoga.

Dieterich edged out to a 12-10 opening quarter lead and pushed the score to 22-15 at halftime. The Movin' Maroons remained in control with a 15-11 third quarter and then held off Neoga in the final period.

Derek Kuhl tallied 15 points for the winners while Bryce Budde chipped in with 10.

Neoga was led by Paci McClure with 16 and Trevor Roy with 12.

SOUTH CENTRAL 73, NORTH CLAY 57

In the consolation championship, South Central tallied a 73-57 win over North Clay (Louisville).

The Cougars edged out to a 17-12 opening quarter lead as Keenin Willshire scored 11 of those points. South Central held a six--point lead at halftime, 33-27.

Then in the third period, three points rained down as Hunter Brandt and Willshire hit two each and the Cougars moved ahead 55-41.

Willshire finished with 25 points while Brandt added 19 and Chase Dodsen 18 for South Central.

North Clay was led by Tyson Jones with 15 and Ian Bailey with 10.

ST. ELMO/BROWNSTOWN 49, WINDSOR/STEW-STRAS 29

In the seventh-place contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown was a 49-29 winner over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.

The Eagles ran off to a 16-2 opening quarter lead and led 24-10 at halftime. SEB then had a 15-8 third quarter.

Andy Goldsborough tallied 20 for the winners while Jacob Baron chipped in with 12.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg was led by Samuel Vonderheide with seven.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Ian Bailey (North Clay), Andy Goldsborough (St. Elmo/Brownstown), Keenin Willshire (South Central), Cole Niebrugge (Dieterich), Trevor Roy (Neoga), Chase Dodson (South Central), Derek Kuhl (Dieterich), Paci McClure (Neoga), Kaden Eirhart (Altamont), Jack Hoene (St. Anthony), Aidan Jahraus (Altamont) and Jaccob Dust (St. Anthony).
