Effingham High School took the opening lead but Teutopolis came back with a strong opening quarter run and went on for a 47-32 girls basketball victory Friday evening.
The Hearts ripped out to a 5-0 first period lead as Hayley Diveley tallied a three-pointer and Taylor Armstrong connected with a basket. But the Wooden Shoes got untracked and went on for a 14 point run and led 14-5 at the end of the opening quarter. Lexie Niebrugge provided the push with two three-pointers and a regular basket while Kaitlyn Schumacher provided five points.
T-town's man-to-man defense produced eight Hearts turnovers in that opening quarter.
EHS calmed down in the turnover department in the second period and pulled within seven points several times but the Shoes still had a 10-9 run to lead 27-14 at hafltime.
Teutopolis came out with a 12-9 third period as Olivia NIemerg hit two trifectas and L. Niebrugge another three-pointer to lead 36-22 going into the final period.
The Hearts could muster only three of 11 shots in the final quarter as T-town had little trouble putting the game in the victory column.
Two players hit double figures for the Shoes. L. Niebrugge finished with 18 while Niemerg tallied 12. Niemerg led on the boards with five.
Effingham did not have a player in double digits. Diveley, Callie Feldhake and Taylor Armstrong all scored six points each. The Hearts drop to 11-13 on the season.
Teutopolis pushed its season into the 20 win column and stands at 20-7 overall.
