TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham High School improved its Apollo Conference record to 4-4 on the season with a 45-37 win over Taylorville in girls basketball Monday evening.

 

The Hearts ran off to a 14-4 opening quarter lead and led 24-15 at halftime.

Ella Niebrugge tallied 13 points while Annie Frost added 12. Niebrugge had three trifectas and was two of two at the line.

The Hearts improved to 11-12 on the season and will be back in action Friday playing host to Teutopolis.

At St. Anthony

South Central came calling in National Trail Conference play and Effingham St. Anthony sent the Cougars home with a 65-53 loss.

The Bulldogs edged ahead 14-12 in the opening quarter and led 28-21 at halftime. St. Anthony then had a 21-16 third period and finished out strong.

Three Bulldog players finished in double figures. Lucy Fearday led the way with 20 while Riley Guy added 18 and Reese Jones 16. Guy connected on four three-pointers while Jones added two.

Halle Smith led South Central with 14 points while Laney Webster added 11. The Cougars fall to 7-16.

At Cowden

Neoga shocked Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in National Trail Conference action Monday evening, 52-42.

CHBC edged out to an 11-7 opening quarter lead and led 23-16 at halftime.

Neoga then decided it was time to get in gear and outscored the Bobcats 19-8 in the third period and 17-11 in the final quarter for the win.

Olivia Titus scored 29 points, connecting on nine field goals that included four three-pointers and was seven of seven at the line. The Indians improved to 14-14 overall.

CHBC was led by Lauren Wojcik with 12 points and Gracie Heckert with 10. Jaelyn Robertson finished with four points but led in rebounding with six and steals with four. Madison Cherry also had six rebounds. The Bobcats dropped to 4-2 in the conference, 18-6 overall.

CHBC claimed the junior varsity contest, 29-21.

At Cowden

At Marshall

Newton traveled to Marshall for Little Illini Conference action and fell to the homestanders, 46-40.

The Eagles ripped off to a 20-8 opening quarter lead but led by only two at halftime, 24-22. Newton had a 9-6 third period but Marshall came roaring back again, this time with a 17-7 final period run.

Brooke Jansen led the way for Newton with 16 points. Claire Carr had six rebounds and three steals. Allison Harris led in assists with four.

Newton drops to 4-2 in the conference, 18-7 overall.

Marshall claimed the junior varsity contest, 50-25.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo picked up a National Trail Conference win over North Clay (Louisville) in varsity action Monday evening.

The Bombers won 52-50. BSE held a 13-12 opening quarter lead but the score was tied at 20-20 at halftime. BSE then had a 16-13 third period and held off North Clay in the final quarter.

Claire Wilhour led the way for the winners with 21 points while Natalie Oberlink added 17.

North Clay was led by Lovett with 20 points.

In junior varsity play, BSE edged North Clay, 14-13.
