The pilot of the helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people that crashed in California Sunday, killing everyone on board, radioed air traffic controllers in his last message that he was climbing to avoid a cloud layer, according to the National Transportation Safety Board's Jennifer Homendy.
A leading theory has been the pilot got disoriented in heavy fog, after having received special clearance to fly in the conditions minutes earlier, but Homendy said NTSB investigators would look at all possible factors.
LA Lakers Next Game Postponed
The NBA announced Monday that it had postponed the L.A. Lakers’ next game, which had been scheduled for tonight, in the wake of the death of Bryant, who'd spent his entire 20-year career with the team.
Lakers' star Lebron James made his first public comments Monday night in an Instagram post that included photos of him with Bryant in which he said he was “heartbroken and devastated” and had been repeatedly crying while trying to write about Kobe.
James said he'd spoken by phone with Bryant Sunday morning, after he'd passed Kobe the night before into third place on the NBA's career scoring list. He wrote, “Didn’t think for one bit in a million years that would be the last conversation we’d have.”
