Josh and Jake Stombaugh have given Effingham Hearts basketball fans some thrills in the two seasons since they moved to the district. Tuesday night's game against Mt. Vernon was among the best.
Josh scored 19 points and Jake added 17 as the Hearts posted a 60-46 victory over the Rams in a game heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. The victory allowed the Hearts to reach the 20-win mark this season against just six losses.
Jake hit four straight twos and Josh made two threes in the first quarter as the Hearts took a 16-10 lead. Josh hit three more threes in the second quarter to help push Effingham's lead to 30-20 at halftime. Jake bounced back with nine more points in the third quarter as the Hearts pushed their advantage to 45-30. Neither twin scored in the fourth quarter, but they had plenty of help by that time as the Hearts posted a 14-point victory.
Leighton Lark finished with eight points, six in the fourth quarter, Hunter Keith scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds, Alex Carie hit a three-pointer and Clark Williamson, Tim Gardewine and Trenton Frey each scored two points.
Effingham shot lights out for the night; 71%, making 25 of 35 shots. The Hearts made four of six foul shots, committed just 11 turnovers and grabbed 17 rebounds. Effingham made all six of its three-point tries.
Mt. Vernon made just 16 of 42 shots for 38% and eight of 13 from the line, turned the ball over just seven times and also grabbed 17 rebounds while making six of 17 three-point shots.
The Hearts, now 20-6 on the season, will close out the regular campaign Friday night with their Senior Night game hosting Mahomet-Seymour. We'll have the game on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
Effingham won the JV game 57-43 to improve to 14-2 on the season. Isaac Foreman scored 17 points, and Matt Wohltman and Kennan Mahaffey each scored 13 points.
