EHS Downs Centralia, Girls Tourney Roundup

Effingham High School handed Centralia a 51-42 loss to end play in the Effingham Girls Basketball Round Robin Thursday.

The Hearts ran off to a 20-10 opening quarter lead ad Hayley Diveley went to work connecting on two three-pointers, a regular basket and a free throw for nine points in the period.

The Hearts led 29-18 at halftime and 37-28 going into the final quarter. EHS hit 20 of 26 free throws while Centralia hit seven of 14.

Diveley finished with 13 points to lead the Hearts while Annie Frost chipped in with 12.

In the round robin, Vandalia defeated Effingham 53-51 in overtime and won over Centralia 44-42 while the Hearts finished out with the victory over Centralia.

At Robinson

Newton captured the consolation championship of the Little Illini Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

The Eagles faced Red Hill (Bridgeport) and edged out to a 15-13 opening quarter lead and led 30-24 at halftime. Newton then put the game away with a 20-5 third period for a 63-38 win.

Brooke Jansen led the way for the Eagles with 23 points while Allison Harris added 15 and Claire Carr 10. Harris connected on four three-pointers while Jansen had two. Jansen led in rebounds with 10 and steals with three. Harris had five assists.

Newton is now 18-6 on the season and back in action Monday at Marshall.

In the championship game, Paris easily handled Olney, 61-26. The third place game went to Marshall over Lawrenceville, 48-40.

At Highland

The finals are now set for the 34th Annual Scott Credit Union Highland Girls Basketball Tournament.

In Thursday evening action, Belleville West defeated Collinsville 54-51 while Breese Mater Dei won over Nashville 37-36. The winners advance to the fifth place game Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

In winner bracket play, Highland defeated O'Fallon 46-36 and will now face Bethalto Civic Memorial Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for the championship.

In the consolation championship, Breese Central takes on Hillsboro at 10 a.m. The third place game is scheduled at 1 p.m. and will feature Teutopolis meeting O'Fallon.

 

At Villa Grove

Finals are scheduled for the Lincoln Prairie Conference Girls Basketball Tournament.

In Thursday's contests, Tri-County downed Cerro Gordo-Bement, 62-24 while Villa Grove-Heritage won over Arthur-Loginton/Atwood-Hammond, 57-39. Arcola defeated Argenta-Oreana, 69-39 while Blue Ridge won over Okaw Valley 42-35.

Saturday's finals feature Blue Ridge against Arcola at 4 p.m. for the consolation championship, Cerro Gordo-Bement meeting ALAH at 5:30 p.m. for third place and Tri-County taking on Villa Grove-Heritage at 7 for the championship.
