EHS, T-town to Square Off, Altamont Beats N. Clay

SALEM -- Effingham and Teutopolis will square off tonight at the 69th Salem Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament after both teams picked up victories Thursday.

The Hearts opened the evening with a 70-64 win over Mount Vernon. The Rams took an 18-14 opening quarter lead but the Hearts battled back on Drew Thompson's seven points in the second period to tie the score at 29-29 at halftime.

Mount Vernon came out to take a 45-42 lead in the third period but here came the Hearts again. Parker Wolfe got on a tear, connecting on three trifectas, a regular basket and two free throws for 13 points as EHS had a 28-19 run to pull out the 70-64 victory.

D. Thompson finished with 21 points while P. Wolfe led the way with 23, Nate Thompson produced 12 points and Brayden Pals added 10.

Teutopolis then claimed a 42-35 win over Thornton Fractional North.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead as Jordan Hardiek scored five of those points, But T.F. North came back with a 12-5 second period run to lead 28-15 at halftime. The Shoes didn't hit a field goal in that quarter, scoring only five points, all from the free throw line.

T-town had a 13-6 third period to pull ahead 28-23 and finished out with a 14-12 final quarter.

The Shoes were led by J. Hardiek with 17 points. He was the lone T-town player in double figures.

The Hearts will meet the Shoes at 8 p.m. today. The winner advances to the championship game Saturday at 8:30 p.m. with the loser heading to the third place contest at 5:30.

At Louisville

Altamont High School improved to 4-0 in the National Trail Conference and 16-3 overall with a 56-40 win over North Clay (Louisville) Thursday.

The Cardinals took a 12-10 opening quarter lead on Altamont as Lane Holkenbrink scored five points. But the Indians got untracked and went on an 11-4 second period run to lead 21-16 at hafltime. In that opening quarter, Aidan Jahraus kept the Indians close scoring nine of the 10 points.

Altamont continued with its momentum with an 18-11 third period and finished out with 17-13 final quarter.

Jahraus led the way for the Indians with 17 points while Denver Duckwitz chipped in with 12.

North Clay was led by Tyson Jones with 13 and Luke Fleener with 11.

Altamont also nabbed the junior varsity  game, 52-25. Jerod Ruffner led the winners with 17. Collyn Ballard led North Clay with six.
