ST. ELMO -- Effingham Sacred Heart and St. Elmo/Brownstown were winners at the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

 

The Shamrocks edged North Clay (Louisville), 31-30 in the opener.

In the second contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown downed South Central, 40-20.

The tournament finishes out tonight as Sacred Heart meets St. Elmo/Brownstown at 5:30 for the consolation championship, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City faces Stewardson-Strasburg at 6:45 for third place and Sigel St. Michael takes on Dieterich at 8 for the championship.

 

At Efingham

Effingham and Greenville split seventh-grade A and B games Wednesday.

Effingham was a winner in the seventh-grade A contest, 42-24. The Mustangs held a 20-13 halftime lead then had a 22-11 second half.

Flack tallied 13 while Belcher added 11.

In the seventh-grade B game, Greenville came out a 25-17 winner. The score was tied at 4-4 after the opening quarter before Greenville had an 11-2 second period run.

Leading the Mustangs were Nelson and Spicer with four each.

At Mattoon

Effingham St. Anthony captured a 52-49 win over Mattoon in seventh-grade basketball action Wednesday.

The Bullpups trailed Mattoon 15-6 after the opening quarter but had a 16-6 second period run to pull within a point at hafltime. Mattoon pushed the lead to two points going into the final quarter. That's when the Bullpups had an 11-9 run to tie the score. In the overtime period, St. Anthony then had a 7-4 lead to claim the victory.

St. Anthony was led by S. Link with 23 points and R. Schmidt with 15.
