Newton Nabs Boys Cage Victory, Salem Scores

NEWTON -- Lawrenceville High School came calling and edged Newton, 44-42 in boys basketball competition Wednesday evening.

 

The Eagles moved out to an 11-10 opening quarter lead but the Indians came back with a 15-9 second period to lead 25-20 at halftime. Newton had a 7-6 third period to pull within 31-27 and outscored Lawrenceville in the final period but still fell a basket short.

Newton had two players finish in double figures. Kyle Schafer led the way with 17 points while Evan Schafer chipped in with 15.

The Eagles claimed the junior varsity contest, 58-45. Meinhart led with 19 while Mulvey added 15.

At Salem

East St. Louis and Carbondale won in in first round play at the 69th Salem Boys Invitational Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

East St. Louis opened with a 73-33 pounding of Highland.

In the second contest, Carbondale won over Salem, 46-29.

East St. Louis and Carbondale square off in winner bracket action at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Highland and Salem meet in consolation bracket play at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Tonight's games feature Effingham taking on Mount Vernon at 6:30 followed by Teutopolis meeting Thornton Fractional North at 8.
