GREENVILLE -- Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony competed in opening round play at the James Burke Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament in Greenville Monday evening.

The Bullpups tallied a 38-31 victory over Troy Triad. Effingham fell to Greenville, 24-20.

In other scores, Aviston downed Staunton 40-14 and Salem defeated Hillsboro 48-13.

Effingham will meet Staunton tonight at 6 followed by Hillsboro taking on Triad at 7.

St. Anthony is back in action Thursday against Salem at 7. The opening game that night features Aviston facing Greenville at 6.

At St. Elmo

Sigel St. Michael, Stewardson-Strasburg and Dieterich were winners Monday evening at the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament.

St. Michael downed Effingham Sacred Heart, 39-31.

In the second contest, Stewardson-Strasburg won over St. Elmo/Brownstown, 35-22. The two teams were tied at 7-7 after the opening quarter and Stew-Stras moved ahead 24-13 at halftime.

Gurgel tallied 14 for the winners who improve to 7-13. SEB was led by Atwood with nine.

Dieterich claimed the final game of the evening over South Central, 43-30.

The tourney continues tonight as St. Michael takes on Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 6:15 and Stew-Stras faces Dieterich at 7:30.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis handed Taylorville two losses in junior high boys action Monday.

In the seventh-grade game, the Wooden Shoes won 36-29. T-town broke a 7-7 opening quarter tie with a 13-7 second period then held off a final quarter challenge by Taylorville.

Jacob Bushur led the Shoes with 11 points.

In the eighth-grade contest, T-town stepped out to a 21-5 opening quarter lead and went on for a 46-16 victory.

Brett Kreke led the Shoes with nine points.
