Bulldogs Season Comes to an End

The St. Anthony Bulldogs saw their boys basketball season come to an end Monday night, losing to the Greenville Comets 51-40 in first round action at the Class 2A Hillsboro Regional.  The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. 

The Bulldogs got out of the gate well against a team they defeated 66-40 at the Vandalia Holiday Tournament December 29.  The Comets, though, started getting some shots to drop and were within 15-12 after one quarter.  The Bulldogs scored just 25 points over the final three quarters while Greenville pulled within 20-19 at halftime and then outpointed the Bulldogs 20-9 in the third quarter to pull from one point back to lead by 10 heading into the final period.  Greenville outscored St. Anthony 12-11 in the fourth quarter to win by 11 points.

St. Anthony made just 15 of 49 shots from the field, including one of eight three-point tries.  The Bulldogs also made just nine of 17 foul shots, committed 14 turnovers and pulled down 34 rebounds. 

Greenville made 36% of its shots, 16 of 45 from the field and made 14 of 22 free throws while committing 15 turnovers and pulling down 32 rebounds as well as hitting five of 22 three-point shots.

Jacob Schuette led the Bulldogs with 16 points, just five in the second half.  Jason Vogel scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Andrew Gardewine scored eight points, six in the fourth quarter.  Alex Hoelscher scored four points, Charlie Schultz two points, and Matt Gibson one point. 

Tyler Hutchinson led a balanced Greenville attack with 13 points.

Greenville improved to 12-18 and will play Teutopolis Wednesday at 6pm in semifinal action, a game we'll have on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. 

St. Anthony closes its campaign with an 11-19 record, and says goodbye to seniors Jacob Schuette, Charlie Schultz, Jason Vogel, Patrick Martelli and Logan Rogers.
