Dieterich Faces Newton For Tourney Crown

DIETERICH -- Dieterich and Newton will square off for the championship of the Dieterich Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament today.

 

In Friday action, Arcola downed Oblong, 64-30.

In the second contest, Newton won over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 62-38. The Eagles stepped out to a 19-6 opening quarter lead and held a 36-16 haltime tally.

The Eagles had two players hit the double digit mark. Schafer tallied 21 points, scoring 13 in the opening quarter run. Tharp finished with 12.

CHBC was led by Daniel Lucas with 12 and Jadon Robertson with 11.

Sullivan then defeated Red Hill (Bridgeport), 50-44.

In game 10, Arcola edged North Clay (Louisville), 69-61.

The Purple Riders took a 16-13 opening quarter lead and went on an 18-7 second period run to lead 34-20 at halftime. Arcola held a 47-36 margin going into the final quarter 

North Clay mounted a comeback in the final quarter only to fall short. Arcola took care of business knocking in nine free throws and Edwards banged home three regular baskets and finished with 22 points.

North Clay was led by Luke Fleener with 23 points and Tyson Jones scored 17.

Newton then picked up its second win of the day by downing Red Hill, 47-32.

The Eagles held an 18-12 halftime lead as scoring was sparse in the opening half. Newton came back with an 11-7 third period run and had an 18-13 final quarter.

Zumbahlen tallied 18 for the winners while Schafer chipped in with 10.

In the final game of the evening, Dieterich handed North Clay a 65-55 loss.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 19-16 opening quarter lead as Cole Niebrugge knocked in two three-pointers and finished with 12 in the opening quarter. Pete Britton added five on a three-pointer and a regular basket.

North Clay then came back with a 15-7 second period to lead 31-26 at halftime. Lane Holkenbrink scored seven in the quarter while Jones and Ethan Bible had a three-pointer each.

Dieterich came back with a 21-17 third quarter but still trailed 48-47 going into the final period. That's when the Maroons got back on track with an 18-7 run to pull out the victory.

Five players hit double figures for Dieterich. C. Niebreugge tallied 20 while Derek Kuhl had 12 and Cory Gephart, Britton and Collin Hartke scored 10 each.

North Clay was led by Jones with 14 and Bible and Bailey with 12 each.

Dieterich faces Newton at 8 p.m. today for the championship. Oblong meets CHBC at 1 p.m. for seventh place while North Clay takes on Red Hill at 2:30 for fifth. Arcola meets Sullivan for third place at 4.
