MATTOON -- Effingham St. Anthony dropped two losses, one against Altamont in the Mattoon Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday while the Indians picked up two wins.

 The Bulldogs opened the tourney with a 62-31 defeat at the hands of Olney. The Tigers held a 36-18 halftime lead. Blank finished with 25 points to lead Olney while Hughes added 12 and VanMatre tallied 10.

For St. Anthony, Riley Guy scored 16 and Lucy Fearday chipped in with 11.

Altamont then handed Galesburg a 49-39 loss. No other information was provided.

Altamont squared off against St. Anthony in the final game of the day and claimed a 61-46 win. The Indians stepped out to a 21-12 opening quarter lead and led 36-18 at halftime.

The Indians had three players hit double figures. Rachel Jackman led the way with 19 while Ellie McManaway tallied 14 and Brooke Runge 12.

The Bulldogs were led by Guy with 16 and Fearday with 11

Other scores for the day included Mahomet-Seymour 47, Decatur St. Teresa 32, Mattoon 51, Vandalia 36, Mahomet-Seymour 41, Vandalia 25, Olney 33, Galesburg 32 and Mattoon 53, Decatur St. Teresa 37.

Tjhe tournament continues today as Decatur St. Teresa faces Vandalia at 8;30 followed by St. Anthony taking on Galesburg at 10, Olney meeting Altamont at 11:30 and Mattoon against Mahomet-Seymour at 1 p.m. Then it's pool play with four more games on tap.

Dieterich Holiday Tournament

The Dieterich Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament got underway with six games Thursday.

The tournament opened in style as Dieterich edged South Central, 54-53 in the first game.

The Movin' Maroons held that one point lead after the first quarter, 18-17 then moved into a 32-27 halftime lead. South Central came back with a 14-11 third period to pull within 43-41 going into the final quarter. In the final period, the Cougars outscored Dieterich 12-11 only to fall a point short.

Dieterich had two players in double figures, Kaitlyn Boerngen with 15 points and Kyla Johnson with 13.

South Central was led by Laney Webster with 26 and Brooklyn Garrett with 10.

In the second contest, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City handily defeated Casey-Westfield, 66-31. The Bobcats took a 34-18 halftime lead and then it was only a matter of time.

CHBC had two players in double figures, Gracie Heckert with 19 and Jaelyn Robertson with 12. Heckert hit four three-pointers.

Newton then handed Brownstown/St. Elmo a 57-46 loss. The Eagles edged ahead 19-18 at halftime then had a 48-28 second half.

Brooke Jansen tallied 21 and Allison Harris 20 for the winners. Allison Einhorn chipped in with 10.

BSE was led by Olivia Campbell with 17 and Claire Wilhour with 12.

CHBC tallied its second win of the day by downing Arcola, 58-34. The Bobcats ripped out to a 25-6 opening quarter lead and that was the contest.

Robertson tallied 24 for the winners while Lauren Wojcik added 13.

In the fifth contest, North Clay (Louisville) handed Casey-Westfield a 59-30 loss.

The Cardinals held a 35-22 halftime lead and had a 22-6 third period surge.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Hailey Miller led the way with 18 while Madison Lovett added 17 and Maleah Holkenbrink 10.

In the final game of the day, Newton tallied a 54-38 victory over Dieterich.

The Cardinals ran off to a 39-22 halftime lead. Only one player hit double figures for the Eagles but 10 players scored in the contest. Jansen led the way with 20 points.

Dieterich was led by Boerngen with 13.

The tournament continues today with Arcola against Casey-Westfield at 10, South Central taking on Newton at 11:30, North Clay against Arcola at 1, Brownstown/St. Elmo facing South Central at 2:30, CHBC against North Clay at 4 and Dieterich finishing out the day by taking on Brownstown/St. Elmo at 5:30.
