NEWTON -- Effingham High School came back from a loss to pick up a victory in the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday.

The Hearts handed Flora a 53-38 loss. The Wolves took a 17-10 opening quarter lead and led 28-21 at halftime. The Hearts came roaring back with an 18-6 third quarter to pull ahead 39-36 then had a 14-4 final period.

"This was a tale of two halves," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "I give our kids a lot of credit. They hungini there and played through a tough first half. Our defense was awful in the first half.

"We really got after it in the second half. Ella Niebrugge and Taylor Armstrong helped keep us in the game in the first half. Then Katie Carie, Callie Feldhake and Annie Frost had good second halves. We got contributions from everyone in the second half. We have to learn to play four quarters."

The Hearts were led by three players with 11 points each, Niebrugge, Armstrong and Feldhake. Feldhake had six rebounds and four assists while Carie had four rebounds, four steals and four assists and Hayley Diveley had three steals and three assists.
