EFFINGHAM 73, HIGHLAND 38

No one knew exactly what to expect from the Hearts, especially when you consider several team members were playing football on Saturday afternoon and had one practice before Tuesday's game. Well, they did just fine.

Effingham won the opening tip and turned it into a basket and never quit from that point. The Hearts were up 19-7 after one quarter then outscored the Bulldogs 23-9 in the second quarter to lead 42-16 at halftime. A 15-13 third quarter edge put the Hearts ahead 57-29 and Effingham outscored the Bulldogs 16-9 in the final period to post the 35-point win.

Effingham shot 48% from the field, 26 of 54 including 8 of 25 threes. The Hearts made 13 of 25 free throws, turned the ball over 11 times, and pulled down 37 rebounds.

Highland made 32% of its shots, 16 of 50 including 2 of 13 threes. The Bulldogs made just 4 of 11 foul shots, committed 18 turnovers, and grabbed 25 rebounds.

Nine different players scored for Effingham, led by Parker Wolfe with 19 points on 7 of 12 shooting, and grabbed five rebounds. Drew Thompson scored 18 points on 5 of 12 shooting and four of five from the line. Also scoring for the Hearts: Wyatt Jones 9, Nate Thompson 8, Jacob Stoneburner 6, Tate Niebrugge 4, Brayden Pals 4, Jacob Briggerman 3, and Max Woelfer 2.

Freshman Cade Altadonna led Highland with 11 points.

It was the season opener for both ballclubs.

TEUTOPOLIS 62, BREESE CENTRAL 51

The game was marred by an incident at the end of the third quarter when Emit Jansen of Breese Central went up for a corner jumper and came down with a displaced kneecap. He laid crumpled on the baseline for some time while care was administered at the scene. He was then transported for additional treatment.

Teutopolis led throughout the contest, up 15-9 after one quarter, 33-20 at halftime, and 48-35 after three periods before Breese Central posted a 16-14 edge in the fourth quarter to account for the 11-point Shoes win.

Teutopolis hit 48% of its shots, 25 of 52, including 5 of 16 threes, made 7 of 17 free throws, turned the ball over 12 times, and grabbed 26 rebounds.

Breese Central hit 41% from the field, making 16 of 39 shots including 5 of 15 threes, hit on 14 of 24 foul shots, committed 17 turnovers, and grabbed 19 rebounds.

Matthew Deters came off the bench to lead Teutopolis with 19 points and six rebounds. Deters made 9 of 12 shots. Jordan Hardiek added 13 points, and Evan Wermert scored 12 points. Also for the Shoes: Brock Deters 6, Mitch Hardiek 3, Luke Ungrund 3, Evan Addis 2, Sam Bushur 2, and Jack Poelker 2.
