EHS, St. A, T-town Open Girls Season With Wins

LOUISVILLE -- Effingham High School opened the girls basketball season with a 46-36 win over North Clay (Louisville) Tuesday evening.

The Hearts ran out to a 17-5 opening quarter lead and led 28-18 at halftime. The two teams played to an 18-18 second half.

Taylor Armstrong led the Hearts with 12 points while Annie Frost contributed 10. Frost led the team in rebounds with nine. Sawyer Althoff had four steals and Hayley Diveley had three assists.

"This was a good start for us tonight," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We had some really good spurts of play and got a lot of contribution from a lot of kids. We are learning every possession. We made some mistakes but I'm really proud of the way they battled every possession. The effort was excellent."

North Clay was led by Lovett with 20 points. Lovett tallied five in the first quarter then had a big second period, scoring 11.

Effingham claimed the junior varsity contest 45-16. The Hearts were led by Sam Urch with 10 points.

The Hearts won't return to action until next Monday when they compete in the Bob Kerans Tournament at Newton taking on Altamont at 6 p.m.

At Dieterich

Effingham St. Anthony tallied a 53-42 win over Dieterich in action Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs and Movin' Maroons played to a 10-10 opening quarter tie before St. Anthony moved ahead at halftime, 19-13. The two teams tallied 14 each in the third period and St. Anthony finished out strong with a 10-5 final quarter.

R. Guy tallied 14 points for the Bulldogs while L. Fearday scored nine, R. Jones eight and I. Hakman eight in even scoring.

Dieterich was led by A. Bierman with 11, M. Brummer with nine and K. Johnston with eight.

In junior varsity play, St. Anthony picked up an 18-12 victory. The Bulldogs were led by Fearday and Willenborg with four each. Dieterich was led by Esker with six.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis opened with a 68-41 victory over Newton in action Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes zipped out to a 20-9 opening quarter lead behind four players scoring. C. Bushur led the way with seven points.

The lead went to 41-23 at halftime and 56-30 going into the final quarter.

Three players hit double digits for the Shoes. O. Niemerg led the way with 15 points while C. Roepke tallied 14 and C. Bushur 12. Bushur pulled down 10 rebounds while Konkel had seven. Roepke led in steals with six. Niemerg had two assists and two blocked shots.

Newton was led in scoring by Allison Harris with 11 and Whitney Zumbahlen with nine. Harris pulled down five rebounds and had two steals. Eliza Bierman had three assists.

Cerro Gordo-Bement claimed a 33-19 win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in action Tuesday.

CGB edged out to an 8-5 opening quarter lead and led 14-9 at halftime. CGB then had a 19-10 second half.

Mikala Nichols tallied 13 points for Windsor/Stew-Stras. Nichols also led in rebounds with 10 and steals with three. Natalie Hayes had two assists.

At Cerro Gordo

At Martinsville

Cumberland fell in a close contest to Martinsville, 38-36 Tuesday evening.

The Pirates edged out to an 11-10 opening quarter lead and led 19-15 at halftime. Cumberland still held the lead going into the final quarter, 25-22. But Martinsville came back with a 16-11 final period to pull out the win.

Z. Mitchell led Cumberland with 15 points and three assists. M. Scott pulled down eight rebounds.
