BEECHER CITY -- Altamont and Sigel St. Michael will square off for the championship of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament after capturing victories Thursday evening.

Altamont handed South Central a 40-23 loss. Altamont stepped out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead and led 24-10 at halftime. Altamont then had a 12-6 third period run.

Nelson tallied 21 for the winners while Boehm scored nine. South Central was led by Cowger with 10.

In the second game, St. Michael claimed a 36-20 victory over Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor.

The Sharpshooters trailed SSW 4-2 after the opening quarter but edged ahead 11-10 at halftime. St. Michael then found the range, outscoring SSW 19-5 in the third period and went on for a 36-20 win.

Hotze led the way for the winners with 17 while Halton added nine. SSW was led by Kinkelaar with eight.

The tournament continues tonight with consolation bracket play as Dieterich faces North Clay (Louisville) at 6 p.m. followed by Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against Brownstown/St. Elmo at 7:15. The winners advance to the consolation championship Saturday at 9 a.m.

Altamont and St. Michael will meet for the championship at 11:30 a.m. Saturday while South Central and Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor square off at 10:15 for third place.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony and Nokomis split victories in Thursday competition.

Nokomis claimed the seventh-grade win, 19-14. Nokomis took an 8-4 first half lead then had a 10-3 third period run.

St. Anthony was led by Nuxoll with seven points.

In eighth-grade play, the Bullpups picked up a 27-11 victory. St. Anthony zipped out to a 9-0 opening quarter lead and led 17-4 at halftime.

The Bullpups had even scoring as Geen tallied eight, M. Kibler seven and Niemeyer six.
