EHS Frosh To Play For Apollo Conference Tournament Title

SALEM -- Effingham High School advanced to the championship game of the Apollo Conference Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament with two victories Saturday at Salem High School.

The Hearts won the opener over Salem 63-57. The score was knotted at 9-9 after the opening quarter. EHS then outran Salem 23-10 in the third period for a 32-19 halftime lead and led 51-37 going into the final period. Salem then had a 20-12 final quarter.

Effingham was led by Michael Woltman with 15 points and Sean Zerrusen with 14.

In the second contest, Effingham edged out to an 11-6 opening quarter lead and led just by a point at halftime. Charleston then took a 32-25 lead going into the final quarter when the Hearts outscored the Trojans 16-5 to pull out the four-point victory.

Jared Minor tallied eight points while Woltman and Reed Schafer had seven each for the winners.

The third game went to Salem over Charleston 66-59.

Effingham now advances to the championship game this coming Saturday at Charleston High School at 12:30 p.m. against Mattoon.

Mattoon defeated Mount Zion 53-43 at Mount Zion High School. Mattoon then won over Paris 61-48. Paris defeated Mount Zion 72-32.

In other games this Saturday at Charleston High School, Charleston meets Mount Zion for fifth place at 10 a.m. and Salem takes on Paris at 11:15 a.m. for third place.
